Westhampton Beach - The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center's Nancy and Frederick DeMatteis Arts Education Program is proud to present its Teen Theatre Project's first production of a full-length play, "Our Town," starring local teens, on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15.
Centered on George Gibbs, the son of a doctor, and Emily Webb, the daughter of a newspaper editor, "Our Town" is a three act play that explores the universal theme of everyday life in small-town America.
The company consists of 14 incredibly talented young people ranging in age from 12 to 16. Actors come from as far west as Medford and as far east as Southampton to put together the show.
Julienne Penza, the Managing Director of Arts Education at WHBPAC and director of the play, taught the young actors acting techniques, character development and the thematic elements of the play - love, loss, and the universal human experience. "It is such a joy for me to direct these fantastic teen actors in such a powerful and poignant piece of theatre," says Penza. "I truly hope that the community comes out to share in the celebration of our young people, our performing arts center and, of course, 'Our Town'!"
The goal of the WHBPAC's Arts Education Program is to ensure that the arts play an integral role in the lives of both children and adults in our communities. WHBPAC Arts Education Programs currently provide a distinctive and comprehensive array of offerings for children and their families year-round. Participation in the performing arts can unleash creative energy, help a youngster to find his or her unique voice, reinforce valuable life skills and support the development of an appreciation and lifelong love for the arts.
