Southampton - Student activists at Stony Brook Southampton will be urging the public to consider a Genetically Modified (GM) food-free Thanksgiving this year with a timely presentation.

As part of an on-going Environmental Education Writing and Advocacy project, student Kathleen Furey and Professors Heather Dune Macadam and Jim Quigley are sponsoring a free presentation open to the public on GM foods and their environmental impact. There will also will be a film screening, "The World According to Monsanto," along with the presentation, "Food Sovereignty and GM Foods."

The event will be held on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m. in Avram Theater. For more information, contact Furey at 916-397-1588 or email cleanfoodearth@gmail.com. Furey adds, "The community, students, faculty and staff are invited for this interactive educational outreach and advocacy for Food Sovereignty and the dangers of Genetically Modified foods and food patenting."

The long-awaited film by French filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin is described as a "chilling documentary" on the dangers of genetically modified food and "the company that has instigated so much genetically modified food and pesticides into our lives."

I've known Kathleen Furey for years and she is unwavering in her love for humanity, coupled with a righteous sense of indignation where people are (ab)used for the mere sake of corporate profit and domination. Even though we live on opposite coasts, I remain one of Kathleen Furey's biggest proponents because I know her heart, her intellect and her relentless and scrupulous way of leading people into "the light" and into personal empowerment. Thanks, Kathleen! You are serving your purpose very well ad are an example to us all.

Guest (Caroline Dwyer) from Stony Brook Southampton says:
I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to Kathleen Furey for organizing the event “GM Foods and You” held in the Avram Auditorium of Stony Brook University at Southampton on November 19, 2009. I would further like to extend my thanks to the panelists (including Steve Storch- Halsey’s Green Thumb Organic Farm, Linda Stasiak- Holistic Esthetician and Certified Holistic Health teacher, Eileen Weilbacher- Certified Holistic Health Counselor, Matthew Doris- Food Service Director, Tuckahoe School District, Dr. James Quigley- faculty member Stony Brook Southampton: Environmental Design, Policy and Planning ; Political Science and Bob DeLuca- President of the Group for the East End), who contributed their time and expertise to a question and answer period following Ms. Furey’s screening of Marie-Monique Robin’s documentary “The World According to Monsanto”. These members of the faculty and community did a great service to the Southampton student body and the greater Long Island population by so generously sharing their knowledge concerning the matters addressed in Ms. Furey’s presentation. The controversies surrounding Monsanto and their production of GM (genetically modified) foods and products are of great concern, not only locally, but to the citizens of the United States and the world at large. It is only through advocacy and the spread of information that we are able to make the changes necessary ensuring that we retain sovereignty over our consumables and other products that we come into contact with every day. Currently, in the United States, there is no law mandating that GM foods need to be labeled as such. I don’t know about you, but I would certainly like to have a choice as to whether or not I put something in my body, or my child’s, that has been biologically manipulated in a laboratory. Thank you Ms. Furey for standing up to the giants and working towards a day when, perhaps, we will truly know exactly what we are eating! More information on GM foods and what you need to know about them is available at www.cleanfoodearth.blogspot.com and www.responsibletechnology.org.

Guest (Faith) from Leonardville, Kansas says:
YES! I'm so glad to see the word about the danger of GMOs is finally getting out! On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called on “Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.” They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. AAEM’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. They conclude, “There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation,” as defined by recognized scientific criteria. “The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.” Say NO to GMOs!
