East Hampton - The Hamptons International Film Festival, working in association with
Guild Hall, concludes its three-part "Summer Docs" series with a screening of the highly anticipated film by
Emily Kunstler and
Sarah Kunstler, "William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe." The film will screen at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Friday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m.
Series host
Alec Baldwin will introduce the film and lead a discussion with Criminal Defense Attorney
Gerald B. Lefcourt, who worked closely with William Kunstler on controversial cases through the 1960s and 1970s.
"We are proud to be screening such a personal and intimate film. Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler give a unique perspective of what it was like to grow up with their with their highly controversial father," says Hamptons International Film Festival Executive Director
Karen Arikian.
"Kunstler was a complex man, whether in the courtroom or at home, as is evidenced by this remarkable portrait created by his own daughters" says Film Festival Board Member and award winning actor Baldwin.
In "William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe" filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler explore the life of their father, the late radical civil rights lawyer. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kunstler fought for civil rights with
Martin Luther King, Jr. and represented the famed "Chicago 8" activists who protested the Vietnam War. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or when the American Indian Movement stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer.
To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most reviled members of society, including rapists and assassins. William Kunstler was a man who believed that, however unpopular, justice should serve all.
In addition to the Peter J. Sharp Foundation, The "Summer Docs" Series is supported by American Airlines and Altour. Tickets for the screening are available for purchase at www.guildhall.org or at the Guild Hall Box Office.
The 17th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival will now take place over Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 8 through Oct. 12.
