Southampton - The Parrish Art Museum's Opera and Ballet in Cinema program will present two programs the weekend of June 4 and June 5. Filmed at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in 2007,
Jules Massenet's five-act opera "Manon" will screen on Saturday, June 4, at 2 pm. On Sunday, also at 2 p.m., the Museum will present an encore screening of the ballet "Coppélia" from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The Bolshoi production was telecast live to the Parrish, and to other Emerging Pictures venues, on May 29.
Created in 1884 and based on the 1731 novel by the Abbé Prévost, "Manon" is Massenet's most popular and famous work and a veritable paradigm of French opera. It tells the tale of two adolescents who elope to Paris, where life's realities uncover their true characters. This production stars four of today's operatic luminaries
Rolando Villazón,
Manual Lanza,
Samuel Ramey, and
Natalie Dessay.
