Southampton - Well-known as the "actor's director" American film director
Sidney Lumet, passed away Saturday, April 9, at his home in Manhattan, from complications from lymphoma. He was 86-years-old.
Lumet received five Academy Awards nominations as director during his distringuished career for such films as "12 Angry Men" (1957), "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), "Network" (1976) and "The Verdict (1982)." Having never received an individual Academy Award for director, Lument was honored in 2005 with a Lifetime Achievement Honorary Oscar. In total, 14 of Lumet's films have been nominated for Academy Awards.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on June 25, 1924, Lumet studied theatre and acting in both Philadelphia and Columbia University. Lumet began his career in Off-Broadway, then television, and eventually film with his first movie, "12 Angry Men."
Lumet's last film was "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" in 2007, starring
Philip Seymour Hoffman,
Marisa Tomei,
Ethan Hawke and
Albert Finney.
Lumet is survived by his wife, two daughters, two stepchildren, nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
