OLA Film Festival Extended To Two Days, Five Films

Still from "The Maid." (PAM)

Southampton - The Parrish Art Museum and OLA of Eastern Long Island (Organización Latino-Americana) will present the Seventh Annual OLA Film Festival Friday, November 12, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday, November 13, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Two-day tickets are $10, $8 for Parrish Members; one-day tickets are $7, $5 for members.

Still from "Alamar."

Organized by OLA founder Isabel Sepulveda de Scanlon, the festival will kick off Friday evening at 6 p.m. with a reception featuring wine provided by Laurel Lake Vineyards of the North Fork and hors d'oeuvres from Chiquita Latina in East Hampton, Mickey B's Deli in Bridgehampton, and Dejesus Deli Grocery in Southampton. The Mexican film "Alamar" will screen at 6:30 p.m., followed by "Entre Nos" from Colombia.

"Alamar" is set in the turquoise waters of Banco Chinchorro in the Caribbean, home to thousands of species of fish and Mexico's largest coral reef. Living somewhere on the cusp between fiction and documentary, the film tells the story of a young boy whose divorced parents (an Italian mother and Mexican father) make him a child of two worlds.

In "Entre Nos," Mariana is determined to keep her family together. Her children, Gabriel, 10, and Andrea, 6, have grown up in Colombia without their father Antonio, who emigrated to the United States years earlier in order to make a better life for his family. After many years of separation, the family is reunited in New York City. One night Antonio announces he has found work in Miami and will be moving there - alone. Mariana, Gabriel, and Andrea take the audience on a remarkable journey where it witnesses a family's commitment to survival and its unrelenting hope for the American dream.

Saturday's program will begin at 5 p.m. with the Brazilian film "Only When I Dance," which follows the progress of two students with professional aspirations at the Centro de Dança ballet school in Rio de Janeiro. A reception with wine and hors d'ouevres will follow "Only When I Dance."

The Ecuadorian film "So Far" is about the life of a woman from South America struggling to make her way into the United States. To capture the effort and danger of the journey, the filmmaker followed the woman overland from Ecuador through Central America and into the United States, finishing the trip in New York City.
So Far" will be shown at 6:30 p.m.

The evening will conclude with "The Maid," a Chilean film about Racquel, who has served as the maid for the Valdes family for 23 years. Neither truly a member of the family nor simply a servant, she inhabits a vague space somewhere in between. Threatened when the family decides to hire extra help, Racquel engages in a series of increasingly desperate acts to hold on to her position in this insightful comedic drama about family, class, and self-discovery.

The OLA Film Festival is made possible with the support of Bridgehampton National Bank; Cook, Hall & Hyde; Huntington Arts Council; Film Movement; VOZ bilingual newspaper; Hampton Coffee; Laurel Lake Vineyards; and 1-800-CANTASO. The event is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. In Nassau and Suffolk Counties the Decentralization Program is administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc.

The Museum's programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, celebrating 50 years of building strong, creative communities in New York State's 62 counties, and the property taxpayers from the Southampton School District and the Tuckahoe Common School District.
