Southampton - The
Parrish Art Museum has two new films to screened.
"Dad's In Heaven With Nixon"
A documentary feature by
Tom Murray about his family's struggles with autism and bipolar disorder, will be presented at the Parrish Art Museum Friday, August 6, at 5 p.m. The filmmaker, whose family has deep roots in Southampton, which figures prominently in the film, will be present for discussion after the screening.
Murray set out to tell the story of his younger brother
Chris, now 50, who suffered oxygen deprivation at birth and was later diagnosed with autism. Largely through the efforts of his mother
Janice Murray, Chris has led an independent life in New Haven, where is a happy and fulfilled person who creates paintings that have been exhibited in galleries and are held in private and public collections.
However, there is much more to the story. The filmmaker's great-grandfather
Thomas E. Murray attained vast wealth through his 462 patented inventions and worked with Thomas Edison to bring electricity into American homes. Thomas E. Murray's son was a commissioner of the Port Authority under Franklin Roosevelt, socialized with Al Smith and
Jimmy Walker, but died a bipolar alcoholic at 37. The filmmaker's father was incapable of intimacy, prone to bouts of temper, and eventually fell into a downward spiral that included financial ruin and the end of his marriage. He drowned in the surf in Southampton at the age of 52.
"Dad's in Heaven with Nixon" is also a portrait of the filmmaker's indomitable mother, who rejected the advice of doctors who said Chris should be institutionalized and worked tirelessly to insure that he reached his full potential. The film includes much movie footage from the family's idyllic-seeming life in Southampton.
Murray was for many years an Emmy-award winning anchor, reporter, and producer for television news. He formed his own production company in 2001 and has been a producer, director, and writer on many television projects since then. Dad's in Heaven with Nixon is his first documentary feature.
Tickets for the screening and reception to follow are $15 for Parrish members, $20 for nonmembers.
Bruce Springsteen In Film Encore At Parrish
For the second time this summer, the Parrish Art Museum will present a Bruce Springsteen concert film. "Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Live in Barcelona," filmed in 2002 at the Palau Sant Jordi, which will screen Saturday, August 7, at 8 p.m.
The Barcelona concert took place two months into Springsteen's world tour in support of his album "The Rising." Almost three hours long, the film includes classic hits, audience favorites, and seldom-heard rarities, among them "Thunder Road," "Prove it All Night," "Born to Run," "Badlands," "Spirit in the Night," "The Rising," and 18 other titles. 'Live in Barcelona' was the first film of an entire Springsteen concert.
Since 2007 Emerging Pictures has provided several versions of Springsteen concert films to offer financial and promotional support to the wide variety of cultural and performing arts centers that constitute its network of theaters.
Tickets to 'Live in Barcelona' are $10 for Parrish members, $12 for nonmembers, and all proceeds will benefit the Museum. Tickets may be purchased online at
parrishart.org, or at the Museum's information desk.
The Museum's programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency.
