Southampton - The
Parrish Art Museum will resume its New Global Cinema series with four award-winning films that explore diverse cultures and the struggles of individuals in an ever-changing world. Selected by guest curator
John K. Turnbull, the series will begin Friday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m., with "The Visitor," whose lead actor
Richard Jenkins was nominated for the Academy Award for his performance. Turnbull will be present to introduce the screening.
"The Visitor," directed by
Tom McCarthy and released in 2008, portrays disillusioned economics professor Walter Vale (Jenkins), whose life is transformed when he comes to New York to attend a conference and discovers a young Syrian man and his Senegalese girlfriend living in his apartment. His initial irritation gives way to a glimmer of compassion, and he agrees to let the couple stay for a short while. This tentative decision sets off a chain of events that gradually draw Walter back into life and all the complexities that follow from risking relationships with other people.
New Global Cinema: When Cultures Meet will continue with the Chinese film "Still Life" (March 5), the Oscar-winning German production "The Lives of Others" (March 12), and the Turkish film "Distant" (March 19). All programs take place Fridays at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for Parrish members, $7 for non-members.
The Museum's programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency.
