Southampton - After a record breaking 122 million votes,
Scotty McCreery (17) from North Carolina is the 10th season winner of "American Idol." The two hour finale showcasing a plethora of famous performers must now make room on the world music stage for the country crooner.
Both finalists
Lauren Alaina (16), and McCreery are the youngest contestants to make it to the finals in the show's history; both are from the South - McCreery (North Carolina) and Alaina (Georgia); both have strong origins in country music, and both gave audiences a season of great vocals, poise, professionalism and talent.
Wednesday's finale featured performances by a broad range of well-known talents, including
Judas Priest,
Jack Black,
Kirk Franklin with
Gladys Knight,
Tony Bennett,
TLC,
Tim McGraw,
Beyonce,
Marc Anthony with wife and 'Idol' judge
Jennifer Lopez,
Tom Jones,
Lady Gaga,
Carrie Underwood, and
Bono and
Edge from U2 with
Reeve Carney performing a song from U2's composed "Spiderman - Turn Off The Dark" Broadway smash hit, and 'Idol' judge
Steven Tyler.
A wonderful evening of music, in particular McCreery and McGraw performing together, as well as Alaina and Underwood filled the two hour finale leading to the final vote. All Top 13 'Idol' finalists gathered to perform a number of ensemble pieces that perhaps offered a glimpse to what audiences can expect as part of the upcoming 45-city tour.
Both McCreery and Alaina were able to give brand new Ford automobiles to the educators who had the most influence in their lives, Scotty's Chorus teacher and Lauren's high school principal will certainly be driving to school in style, and both were in attendance at the finale. Since both McCreery and Alaina get brand new cars themselves there were keyrings for everyone.
On Tuesday's show each finalist was instructed to sing three songs (1) their favorite choice; (2) a song chosen by the 'Idols' idols, (
George Strait for Scotty, and
Carrie Underwood for Lauren. Strait chose one of his own songs for Scotty, and Underwood chose a song by
Pam Tillis for Lauren); and (3) a song chosen by 'Idol' season mentor
Jimmy Iovine to be released as the first single.
Lauren sang "Flat on the Floor," "Maybe it was Memphis," and "Like My Mother Does." McCreery sang "Gone," "Check Yes or No," and "I Love You This Big." It appeared that Lauren may have won the evening, however, Scotty ultimately proved victorious as the newest 'Idol.'
It seemed spotty for Scotty at the conclusion of Tuesday's program, but this young, extremely talented and humble young man stole the hearts (and ears) of voters to win it all. The always gracious country boy offered his first thanks to the Lord, and managed to embrace and thank each of his fellow contestants on the stage.
A deservedly long career is ahead for both of these talented youngsters.
Congratulations to Scotty! Can't imagine there is anyone who isn't both thrilled and excited to hear more from this very special young man with the remarkable voice.
It should be noted that this season of 'Idol' appeared to bring together a nation that was truly engaged in the outcome of this competition. From the kind, honest and supportive advice offered by the fantastic panel of judges - to the charm of the host, performers, special guests, mentors and the enthusiasm of the audience and voters - This WAS an "American Idol" to watch and enjoy - until next year. . .
Guest (CHUCK) from Fla says:
Pia was the most talented, and should have been in the finals, but this is not a talent contest it is a popularity contest. And what’s up with that disgusting act by GaGa! She sucks! No wonder kids today have no moral values! Why Fox would allow an act like that on a family show is really sad.
