Southampton - New York's percussion/piano quartet Yarn/Wire will perform at the Southampton Cultural Center at 25 Pond Lane, Southampton, on Saturday, December 19, at 8 p.m.
Yarn/Wire will perform the World Premieres of Charlie Looker's "Poison Darts" and Jorge Boehringer's "Questionable Tactics." Both works by these emerging American talents were written for the ensemble through extensive collaborative processes. Looker's piece creates delicate sonic plateaus that shift in unexpected and seductive ways, creating a hypnotic surface texture with a bustling undercurrent of activity. Boehringer's suite is a wry and quirky collection of conceptualist tableaus. Each movement presents the listener with a seemingly simple musical idea whose charm is revealed over time.
Yarn/Wire will also present selections from György Ligeti's "Etudes" and György Kurtág's "Játékok." Ligeti's popular "Etudes" are heirs to the solo piano works of Schumann, Chopin, and Debussy. These brilliant character pieces demand the most of a pianist's technical and expressive ability. Kurtág's "Játékok" (Games) began as a collection of pedagogical studies that have since become well-liked pieces for the stage. Ranging from elegant to barbaric, this collection exhibits both simplicity and sophistication.
Yarn/Wire, a percussion/piano quartet, champions the music of today. Since its founding in 2005, the quartet has performed in concert halls, universities, galleries, and lofts throughout the country. Comprised of percussionists Ian Antonio and Russell Greenberg and pianists Laura Barger and Jacob Rhodebeck, Yarn/Wire members have extensive backgrounds in a repertoire that ranges from Baroque through Contemporary scores, including considerable experience with experimental music technology, popular music genres and avant-garde theatre. Members hold advanced degrees from renowned institutions (Stony Brook University, Manhattan School of Music, UC Berkeley) and have attended and performed at preeminent festivals in the U.S. and abroad (Tanglewood, Darmstadt, Yellow Barn). Yarn/Wire's commissioning initiatives have yielded a substantial number of new works for the instrumentation and collaborative projects, along with concert tours and educational activities, constitute the ensemble's primary activities.
Tickets are $20 general admission/$15 students and seniors and may be purchased by emailing reservations@southamptonculturalcenter.org or by calling 631-287-4377.
