Dick Dale will perform at The Stephen Talkhouse on Aug. 26, featuring his 17-year-old son
Jimmy. This very rare, limited run tour presented by Fender Guitars features selected classic hits hand-picked from the Dick Dale catalog performed by the master and his son, plus a few musical surprises.
Dale is the father of the California Sound. Dale pioneered the Fender Stratocaster and Showman Amplifiers back in the late 1950s and established the first sounds of the Surf Music movement. Future rock icons from
Brian Wilson and
The Beach Boys (who played their first public concert opening for Dale) to
Jimi Hendrix flocked to see the young electric guitar master work his sound for thousands of pre-Beatle teenagers every weekend in Los Angeles.
Dale soon became 'The King of the Surf Guitar' and later the 'Father of Loud' as a result of his groundbreaking experimental designs with high volume performance gear he created with his mentor
Leo Fender. As the 1960s progressed Dale lead the way for a new generation of musicians seeking a louder live sound. Performers craved to duplicate Dale's volume and clarity during the early days and as a result everyone from
Buddy Holly to
The Rolling Stones played alongside Dale just to study his technique.
Today Dale continues to perform live more than ever thanks in great part to
Quentin Tarantino's use of the classic Dale rock hit "Miserlou" featured in "Pulp Fiction." Dale continues to record, most recently lending his guitar skills to
Glen Campbell for a track on his upcoming 2010 release.
Dale and Fender Acoustic Instruments have come together to celebrate Dale's achievements by creating the Dick Dale signature Acoustic Malibu guitar and one for Dale's son - the Jimmy Dale signature Acoustic Kingman guitar. Both guitars feature a Dale designed eco-friendly foundation using a three-inch body which requires nearly half the raw timber of the average acoustic guitar.
Both Dales will be performing exclusively with their Fender Signature Acoustic/Eclectic guitars during their eastern U.S. tour dates. The guitars will be released in January 2010 along with an acoustic album of new music.
