Music for Montauk’s (M4M) 2018 season will culminate on Sunday, October 21 with Hugo Wolf’s Italian Songbook. The special collaboration with Curtis on Tour, the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music, will take place at John Drew Theatre at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The performance, which begins at 2 p.m., will honor Carol Nye, a Music for Montauk board member who passed away recently.
“The songbook is like a Tour of Italy, it evokes the Tuscan countryside, with its Renaissance-arched church towers – Orvieto, Siena and Viterbo,” reflected M4M’s Miloš Repicky.
Italian Songbook tells the captivating tale of two young lovers in the Tuscan countryside through anonymous renaissance Italian poems, which were translated to German, and set to music by Wolf, an Austrian composer.
“The songs are miniatures – short, fleeting and over as quickly as any one of the feelings, quips, reproaches, or conversations the young lovers may have,” Repicky added.
For the performance, M4M will be joined by Pianist Mikael Eliasen of the Curtis Institute with soprano Ashley Robillard and baritone Dennis Chmelensk.
Italian Songbook will feature four 15-minute sets and a brief epilogue.
Tickets are $20 and can be found online, and at Naturally Good (779 Montauk Highway, Montauk) and White’s Liquors (771 Montauk Highway, Montauk).
