Sofia D'Angelo, a 17-year-old singer-songwriter that has headlined at several New York venues from Manhattan's The Bitter End to Amagansett's Stephen Talkhouse
alongside her band, The Sectionals, is set to return to the Parrish Art Museum
on Friday, March 25th at 6 p.m. This time D'Angelo, who presented at PechaKucha Night Hamptons, Vol. 13, will showcase her musical talents.
"Sofia writes and performs music at a level well beyond her years," shared Andrea Grover
, the Century Arts Foundation Curator of Special Projects. "I saw her perform live at Innersleeve Records in Amagansett in 2015 and was stunned to find out that she had just turned 17."
The performance at the Parrish will feature original songs by D'Angelo. "Sofia's lyrics and compositions reflect her humor and understanding of what it means to be human," added Grover.
The rising star was born and raised in New York City
, but she does have an East End connection, as she visits her family's home in East Hampton often. The Chapin School student began her guitar studies with Lowell Marin just five years ago when she was 12, and she practices her vocals with Karen Dryer. D'Angelo often formulates her own arrangements of hit indie songs, and says Led Zeppelin
, The 1975, David Bowie
, Lady Gaga
, and My Bloody Valentine are among her many musical muses. Back in 2013, she sang the Star Spangled Banner before tens of thousands of attendees at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn.
The makings of The Sectionals started to fall into place during the fall of 2012, when D'Angelo was introduced to drummer Mick Golden and bassist Cyan Hunte at a Lowell's World Young Musician's showcase in New York City. When the trio of musicians initially met, they were all only 13-years-old. The following year, under the guidance of Lowell Marin, D'Angelo joined forces with Golden and Hunte to form The Sectionals, and since then, the band has performed D'Angelo's original songs at various sites throughout the City, like Tammany Hall and The Studio at Webster Hall. Along with the teen's originals, The Sectionals also showcase cover songs by Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, Green Day, and The Beatles
. The band's debut and second EPs are currently available on iTunes and Spotify.
Admission to Sofia D'Angelo in Concert is $10, but free for Members, students and anyone under 18-years-old.
