The B-52s, better known as The World's Greatest Party Band, is taking the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center
(WHBPAC) stage by storm on Saturday, May 23rd at 8 p.m. The American new wave band will perform some of their hits, like "Love Shack," "Rock Lobster," and "Roam" at WHBPAC
. The B-52s, consisting of Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson
, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson
, and the late Ricky Wilson, formed in 1977 and have been performing together ever since. Their music spans multiple genres including rock and roll, post-punk rock, and pop rock, and many of their songs have call and response style vocals.
This summer tour, beginning on May 21st in Irving Plaza, comes after the April 21st release of their latest album, Live! 8-24-1979,
which features several live songs from the first two albums, The B-52s
and Wild Planet
, performed by the band at the Berklee Center in Boston.
Along with their vocals, the band is notorious for their big hairstyles and wacky outfits. The name of the band is, in fact, derived from the nickname for exaggerated bouffant styled hairdos and wacky outfits. Although lead singer Kate Pierson told Marc Spitz of The New York Times
that she "used to think the importance of the band gets lost, or overshadowed, by the hairdos and the outfits." Now, she realizes that the "most important legacy is that people had fun."
Put on a groovy outfit and tease your hair for the upcoming concert in Westhampton Beach, because this concert is sure to be filled with both retro and recent hits and a lot of energy.
Tickets start at $125.
WHBPAC is located at 76 Main Street in Westhampton Beach. For more information, call 631-288-1500 or visit whbpac.org.
