East Hampton - "For Lo, The Winter Is Past - A Spring Concert" will be performed by the Choral Society of the Hamptons and the South Fork String Ensemble at the East Hampton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 21, at 3 p.m.
With a title from a famous biblical verse in "The Song of Songs," the concert is a celebration of spring's arrival after a long Hamptons winter. Each of the four choral pieces, which span two-and-a-half centuries, has a joyful theme.
Walter Klauss, who has a house in East Hampton and is music director of the choral group Musica Viva in New York City, returns as guest conductor.
The featured soloists are
Nonie Schuster-Donato, soprano,
Barbara Fusco, mezzo soprano,
Martin Doner, tenor, and
Adam Alexander, bass.
On the program is
Daniel Pinkham's Wedding Cantata, composed in 1959, a setting of poetry from the Song of Solomon. It is not only a tribute to spring, but, as Klaus describes it, "a tender and moving love song that beautifully captures the essence of the biblical verses."
Also on the program are the Magnificat in D Major of
Jan Dismas Zelenka, a prominent Baroque composer, a complex work full of rhythmic and harmonic surprises, and
Mozart's Missa Brevis in D, a compact, six-part setting of the Mass. In true Mozart fashion, it sparkles with vivid and intricate contrapuntal passages. Finally, G.F. Handel's As Longs The Hart For Flowing Streams evokes Psalm 42.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $10 for youths under 18. They may be purchased on the society's website,
www.ChoralSocietyOfTheHamptons.org, at the
Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor, or by calling 631-204-9402. The Choral Society is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions are always welcome.
