The Water Mill Museum will close out its season with Summer Finale 2018, an exhibition that will encompass works by 23 local creatives.
Featuring the 30Squared Group, an arts collective inspired by artist and “daily painter” Aubrey Grainger, Summer Finale 2018 will premiere on Thursday, September 20.
“I kept running into my friends and when I asked them what they were doing, they complained they just weren’t painting or creating,” Grainger explained. “I told them, grab a cup and saucer out of your cabinet, shine a light on it and paint it!” That was a few years ago, and the artist’s dedication caught on leading to the formation of 30Squared, a group of artists who encourage and inspire each other. In the beginning, the artists paint every day for 30 days – which is why they’re dubbed 30 Squared.
4th Annual 30Squared Group Art Show and Sale participants include Ann Lombardo, Anthony Lombardo, Eileen Dawn Skretch, Susan D’Alessio, Pamela Thomson, Mary Anne Bennett, Maryanne Fotia Renz, Dana Little Brown, Barbara Jones, Maureen Travers, Joanne Rosko, Gail Gallagher, Aubrey Grainger, Amy Ledogar Worth, Bonnie Ruben, Lucille Berrill Paulsen, Donna Lynn Dean, Bob Sullivan, Elizabeth Rundquist, Pat Hadley, Mary Ellen Roche, Keith Mantell, and Lena Yaremenko.
“My work is a gesture meant to convey what made me look at that subject, what I saw and what I felt on that day,” Dawn Skretch explained. The artist, who was born in Southampton into a farming family, has always been fond of capturing local landscapes through her works. Whether it’s the air, sea or sweeping fields, her oils on wood can be as petite as 4×6 inches or as grand as 4×8 feet.
“I heard the exclamation of a little girl, upon stepping into the gloom of a garden shed from the dazzling outdoor sunshine. She burst out, ‘This is Amazing!’ It was, and so, I painted 4 large paintings inspired by her amazement,” Anthony Lombardo reflected about Shed Happens I, II, III and IV.
Summer Finale 2018 will remain on view through Monday, October 1. There will be an Opening Reception-Meet the Artists on Saturday, September 22, from 4 to 7 p.m.
