Southampton - On Thursday, August 18, 2011,
Lola Montes Schnabel, will return to Jobs Lane, Southampton, for her second solo exhibition at the
Tripoli Gallery of Contemporary Art, with her recent, Iodine Portraits.
This summer, the artist, who graduated from the Cooper Union, will show a series of portraits of close friends, as well as commissioned pieces painted this past year.
Schnabel constantly finds new mediums and materials for painting and has been working with iodine for several years. By first painting on her subject with shellac ink she then applies iodine. The stain left from the iodine creates an impression of antiquity; the iodine both seeps into the paper and reacts with the shellac, making the piece look as though it has survived decades. The iodine chemically reacts with the surfaces, while the portrait's subject takes form and the painting finds its direction. Schnabel, allowing the iodine to take its natural course, brings fluidity and looseness to her portraits. While her refined sense of what she sees maintains order, Schnabel sees past the exterior and reveals her subject's inner being.
The show will open with a private reception for the artist on Thursday, August 18, 2011 and will be on exhibit until September 8. Opening reception is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
