Southampton - "Flip Flops and Popsicles," A Group Exhibition, will bring to Jobs Lane, Southampton, some of the elements that make summer here so magical, featuring Eric Cahan, Herbie Fletcher, Eric Freeman, Morgan Pearse, Emmett Shine, Gordon Stevenson ,and Darius Yektai.

"In the Hamptons we see a drastic influx of people and energy the second Memorial Day weekend rolls around. I wanted to look at what it is that has always been so attractive about these summer months. It's so great to base a show around something I love as much as summertime," says gallery owner, Tripoli Patterson.

Cahan's ongoing Sky Series reflect the beautiful summer skies that are the essence of summer on the East End. His objective is to create a window into a time and place and to demonstrate how summer memories and colors shift and become abstract. Cahan's polyester resin sculptures are three-dimensional interpretations of his photographs, similarly meant to capture light and conjure up the sensation of sky and/or ocean.

Fletcher has been following summer waves around the world his whole life. He brings the element of surfing and the beach to the exhibition. By combining his brilliant action photography of the best surfers in the world with his knowledge as a veteran surfboard shaper, he prints his photographs on canvas and then covers the canvas with polyester resin. He then conveys his passion of color and movement by adding oil paint to the surface of the resin drenched canvas, bringing his works to life. Living year round at his studio in Sagaponack, Freeman feels the intense change from winter to summer.

In this exhibition, he subtly captures the feelings of summer and celebration. He breaks the surface of his canvas by dissecting the color like a chemist, experimenting with the different hues that make up a certain color. By breaking down each color, he has learned to rebuild it in a way that allows the light to actually bounce around the many layers of paint.

The youngest of the group, Pearse will be debuting her work after graduating from The School of Visual Arts with honors this past spring. Through her video sculptures, Pearse will be creating vignettes of life stuck inside an American landscape. "I see the video and sculptural components as being snow globes (in summer) - stagnant worlds shaken and stirred under glass" explains Morgan.

Shine grew up in Southampton and sees the transformation from off season to on season with the perspective of an insider. Through his sarcastic illustrations he lends a touch of humor to the crowds that come for summer to the beaches of the Hamptons - crowds that sometimes take life very seriously.

Stevenson will be showing his latest works on paper that marry his personal collection of tongue in cheek phrases to his love of classic sign painting. As a child, Gordon loved going to the supermarket and seeing those beautifully styled and designed hand painted sales pitches, which have since been replaced with digital printouts. For this show, Gordon has created witty phrases that remind him of summer and he uses the rediscovered style of sign making to preserve them.

Yektai brings spontaneity to the group with his versatile works on canvas that combines sculpture and painting. Living and making art and music year round in his Bridgehampton studio, he knows that summer is a long time coming, arrives abruptly, and is gone in a flash. His technique of painting relates to the attitude encompassing the Hamptons during its summer months; one of eagerness, taking what presents itself today, knowing that tomorrow is un-promised.

On Saturday, July 2, Tripoli Patterson presents, "Flip Flops and Popsicles," A Group Exhibition, at the Tripoli Gallery of Contemporary Art, 30 Jobs Lane, Southampton, with an opening reception for the artists from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 12 noon to 5 p.m. and Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
