Montauk - Outeast Gallery (65 Tuthill Road, in Montauk 631-375-6730) will host artist
Steve Haweeli's second solo show from Saturday, May 7 to Thursday, May 19. There will be an opening reception on Saturday evening, May 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Outeast Gallery owner,
Scott Pitches, states "This is Steve's second solo show here. His compelling and fresh work brought much attention to the gallery last year and I'm looking forward to a good crowd given his recent success." He appears courtesy of Karyn Mannix Contemporary.
Many of the over 20 works that will be on display feature layers of oil, oil stick, charcoal and acrylic. He is self-taught. Haweeli's paintings have been a process of excavation - revealing layer upon layer of hidden meaning through the medium of paint. These paintings are informed by his various incarnations - gravedigger, traveler, linguist, actor, seminarian, volunteer, barman, wordsmith and entrepreneur - thus contributing to his particular vision of the mosaic of our experience here; often the symbol of the cross permeates the visual dialog within. These creations express the alchemy of fury and freedom he continues to unearth in himself.
He is a regular contributor to group shows at Ashawagh Hall and
Guild Hall in East Hampton. Last year he was regularly featured at Karyn Mannix Contemporary in Southampton. His works may also be viewed at
