Over a span of nearly five decades Don Saco's sculpture has been included in countless museum, group and solo exhibits in this country and abroad. His 16th one-man show, a retrospective of more than 40 figurative and abstract sculptures was presented at the Southampton Cultural Center in 2007. It proved to be a landmark success with collectors and critics.
Since moving to Water Mill in 2003, Saco's work has evolved from the figurative to the abstract. But still, the human dynamics that animate his forceful figures are equally evident in these nonrepresentational pieces. Volume and mass are not static but seem infused with the suppressed power of steel that commands space and is poised for movement. Shapes are defined by line and suggest motion that may ascend effortlessly or be engaged in taut linear dialogue as in the work titled "Tension." While some pieces soar skyward ("Ascent I"), others, like "Woodwinds" repose in lyrical ease. Musical metaphor lends itself readily to these expressive and emotionally charged works.
