East Hampton - In this eye-opening David and Goliath - here Scottish land owners are David, and "The Don" himself,
Donald Trump, is Goliath, a group of proud, stubborn homeowners take on the celebrity tycoon in "You've Been Trumped." At stake are vast stretches of wilderness versus a luxury hotel and golf course.
Directed by
Anthony Baxter, the film received the Special Jury Prize, Traverse City Film Festival; Green Award, Sheffield International Documentary Festival; and Scottish Screen Archive Prize, Best Feature Documentary, Edindocs. A special award of the HIFF went to the film which took the Victor Rabinowitz and Joanne Grant Award for Social Justice.
According to the film's release "The billionaire property developer has bought up hundreds of acres on the northeast coast of Scotland, best known to movie-lovers as the setting for the 1983 classic film "Local Hero." And like the American oil tycoon played by
Burt Lancaster, he needs to buy out a few more locals to make the deal come true. In a land swimming with golf courses, Trump is going to build two more - alongside a 450-room hotel and 1,500 luxury homes. The trouble is, the land he purchased occupies one of Europe's most environmentally sensitive stretches of coast, described by one leading scientist as Scotland's Amazon rain forest, and the local residents don't want it destroyed."
Further, "After the Scottish Government overturns its own environmental laws to give Trump the green light, the stage is set for an extraordinary summer of discontent, as the bulldozers spring into action. Water and power is cut off, land disputes erupt, and some residents have thousands of tons of earth piled up next to their homes. Complaints go ignored by the police, who instead arrest the film's director,
Anthony Baxter. Local exasperation comes to a surreal head as the now "Dr." Trump scoops up an honorary doctorate from a local university, even as his tractors turn wild, untouched dunes into fairways."
Told entirely without narration, the local dialect demands a liberal use of subtitles. Directed by Baxter, "You've Been Trumped" was produced by Angus based independent production company Montrose Pictures Ltd. The film score features music from
Sigur Ros and the band's frontman
Jonsi.
Baxter, whose mother is from the area in question, is a definite hands-on director, who places himself squarely on the side of the land owners, thus perhaps not revealing a completely unbiased film. Documentaries should reveal the situation - not the situation the director wants revealed, and the continued references to a fictional movie ("Local Hero"), peppered throughout the film, including use of the same call box by Baxter to Trump's office appears a bit silly and trite in light of such a serious situation. This film sheds light on a very real problem for very real people, courtesy of a very real and powerful man.
In particular, one land owner,
Michael Forbes, appears to relish his stance against Trump, but it is apparent that no covered dish get together with neighbors and local supporters is a match for the Trump organization and its goals - led in part by Trump's own son.
As the delicate eco-system is destroyed, Baxter turns his attention to the real focus of this film - how can the Scottish government simply ignore the ecological and scientifically proven advice of its own experts? Herein is where this film becomes serious and frightening - according to the government's own experts the destruction is irreversible.
Trump's ego (and hair) are in full force in this film. His continued references to one home owner's property as "a disgusting dump" reveals why Trump may be so successful in his endeavors - simply put - he truly and firmly believes that he will always get what he wants - no matter the cost, and unfortunately for these Scottish land owners he was proven correct.
"Bonny Donny" has left a very large imprint on a very small community of land owners, and a huge impact on an ecological system that will, in fact, impact land owners and golfers for generations to come.
