HIFF And Guild Hall Present 'L'Amour Fou' And 'Bombay Beach' As The Next Films In The SummerDocs Series

East Hampton - SummerDocs, a program of The Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) and Guild Hall, will present two new documentaries, in August and September, rounding out their four film series this summer it was announced by HIFF Executive Director Karen Arikian.

The final documentary of the series, on Thursday, September 1, kicking off Labor Day Weekend, will be Alma Har'el's "Bombay Beach," World Documentary Competition Award-Winner at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival. All films begin at 8 p.m.

SummerDocs Host and HIFF Board Member Alec Baldwin will participate in a question and answer session for "L'Amour Fou" with Barneys New York Creative Ambassador-at-Large, author and fashion icon Simon Doonan, and American author and cultural critic Cintra Wilson.

In Thoretton's "L'Amour Fou," Pierre Bergé, the man with whom YSL shared four decades of his life and love, reflects on the equally extravagant history of their personal relationship. Framed around the 2009 auction of the priceless, elaborate art collection amassed by Yves and Pierre personally over several decades, this extraordinary documentary provides an unprecedented look at the life of a mythic personality, whose personal life matched his public for elegance, extravagance and passion.

Director Har'el will joins Baldwin for a question and answer following the screening of her film, "Bombay Beach." The rusting relic of a failed 1960s development boom, the Salton Sea is a barren Californian landscape often seen as a symbol of the failure of the American Dream. First-time director Har'el revisits this poetically fruitful terrain in her distinctive documentary "Bombay Beach," and finds there a motley cast including a bipolar seven-year-old, a lovelorn high school football star, and an octogenarian poet-prophet. Together they make up a triptych of American manhood in its decisive moments, populating the Salton Sea's land of thwarted opportunity. True to her roots as a photographer, video artist, and music video director, Har'el crafts here an adamantly atypical and artistically innovative film. A dreamlike poem that sets the personal
stories of these distinctive yet familiar characters to a stylized amalgam of observational documentary and choreographed dance, with music by Beirut and Bob Dylan, all cast against the atmospheric scenery of the titular ghost town.

"Our third season of HIFF's SummerDocs continues with two selections we are eager to share with our East End audience. In "L'Amour Fou," we get an unusual look inside the elegant and complicated life of the legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent. And "Bombay Beach," a portrait of the community living by the Salton Sea, is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking," says HIFF Board member and SummerDocs host Alec Baldwin.

"Starting the 2011 SummerDocs series with "Buck" and "Page One: Inside the New York Times" and finishing the series with "L'Amour Fou" and "Bombay Beach," these films are a testament to the success of the series. The ability to bring such strong and interesting documentaries, filmmakers and commentators out east in the summer to the Long Island community is exactly the mission of the series," says HIFF Director of Programming David Nugent.

HIFF greatly appreciates the continued support from their corporate sponsors which include Altour International, American Airlines, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, and Silvercup Studios.
