Surface Library Gallery Hosts "The Gift Of Art"
The Surface Library Gallery will offer a cornucopia of highly original gifts during their annual "Gift of Art" show, opening to a reception on Saturday, November 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the run of this four-week gift-inspired show, 10 percent of all sales will be donated to the Springs Community Food Pantry, which operates out of the Springs Community Presbyterian Church. Due to a recent flood, the kitchen of the Springs Community Presbyterian Church was severely damaged, impairing the Springs Food Pantry services. Proceeds from the "Gift of Art" will be donated towards the renovation and repair of the kitchen to continue feeding those in need in the Springs community. Opening reception guests are encouraged to kindly bring non-perishable canned-goods donations and are invited to enjoy an evening of artfully inspired objects and good cheer. Artful gifts created by resident artists Bob Bachler and James Kennedy, along with an eclectic selection of original design and art objects from invited artists, have been chosen especially for the gift-giving season. Gift items include unique works in ceramics, painting, wood, sculpture and textiles. Guest artists include Bob Bachler, Maeve D'Arcy, Trish Franey, Hokanson + Dix, James Kennedy, Teri Kennedy, Christa Maiwald, Matt Nolen, Gabriele Raacke, Vincent Romaniello, Jim Seffens, Pat Swyler, Ted Tyler and Evan Zatti. The Gift of Art offers a rare opportunity to acquire truly original and highly individual gifts while supporting the Springs Community Food Pantry. Surface Library is located at 845 Springs Fireplace Road, in the Springs district of East Hampton (opposite the Pollock-Krasner House). Gallery hours are Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call 631-291-9061 info@surfacelibrary.com.

It is open to the public for viewing. The artists represent unique talents spanning the world of painting, sculpture and photography working in different media each having a distinct artistic outlook in the work they produce. The 10 artists will be Johanna Caleca, Hilary Dunphy, Trish Franey, Mary Grossman, Salvatore Gulla, Annette Heller, Stephanie Reit, Harry Roth, Jerry Schwabe, and Susan Zwirn. Those who attend will not only see lovely, affordable art works, but will be exposed to a diverse set of artistic viewpoints." Zachary Lazar will be at Canio's Books. |
Canio's Books
Canio's Books (290 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-4926, www.caniosbooks.com) will present novelist
Zachary Lazar who will read from his memoir "Evenings Empire: the Story of My Father's Murder" on Saturday, November 21 at 6 p.m. (published by Little, Brown and Company). When he was just six years old, Lazar's father, Edward, was shot dead by hit men in a Phoenix, Arizona parking garage. The year was 1975, a time when, according to the
Arizona Republic, "land-fraud artists roamed the state in sharp suits, gouging money from buyers and investors." How did his father fit into this world and how could his son ever truly understand the man, his time and place, and his motivations? In 'Evening's Empire,' Lazar, whose novel "Sway" was named one of the Best Books of 2008 by
Rolling Stone, the
Los Angeles Times, and other publications, brilliantly attempts to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to his father's murder. Lazar graduated from Brown University in 1990. He has been a Fellow at The Provincetown Fine Arts Works Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and has received the James Michener/Copernicus Society Prize from the Iowa Writer's Workshop. Lazar grew up in Colorado and now teaches at Hofstra University. "Sway" is his second novel.
East End Arts Council

The public is welcomed to enjoy complimentary local wine and cheese, and to meet the artists for this special gallery event. Sag Harbor artist Seelbach's interest is "Not so much in what something looks like, but with the question "what is happening?" Expressive brushstrokes, layers of paint and rich color are definitive elements of her art. Seelbach utilizes both abstraction and representation to fully express her vision. The captivating little landscapes and interiors of artist Stroh express both contemporary and traditional visions of the North Fork of Long Island. She finds the local light in Jamesport and elsewhere on the North Fork to be particularly inspiring. She is also an art instructor at the Community School of the Arts in Riverhead.

The Watermill Center

Sarah Ortmeyer and
Alexis Kunsak will show "Kant Elegant," an installation of Sculpture and Designer Clothing.
Steven Vega will screen his short film, "Harbor," which focuses upon breath and its effect on movement. Admission is free, and separate RSVPs are required for the installation viewing and the Harbor screening to sarahortmeyer.eventbrite.com and stevenvega.eventbrite.com.
"Kant Elegant" derives its inspiration from the canonic German philosopher Immanuel Kant, who was well known in his time in Königsberg not only as a teacher, writer, and thinker, but also as an inherently elegant man. "Kant Elegant" takes as its point of departure this fact and a quote from Kant: 'Fine art must be clothed with the aspect of nature, although we recognize it to be art.' Ortmeyer and Kunsak literalize the philosopher's statement, integrating designer clothing into an installation of sculpture: one outfit each from Coco Chanel (France), Yohji Yamamoto (Japan), Karl Lagerfeld (Germany), Calvin Klein (USA), and Giorgio Armani (Italy). They also bring
nature into the work, color and pattern-matching the clothing and sculpture to fitting counterparts in the grounds surrounding Watermill. The exhibition will take place in one the Watermill Center's black-floored studios.
Steven Vega's "Harbor" is a series of beautiful moving images rather than a text-based film. Focusing upon breath and its effect on movement, the 10 to 12-minute piece combines costume design, dance, video and music to conjure a surreal world. It is being shot at Watermill, in the absolute dark and amid wind and rain in the knee at the center of the building. One of the work's key materials is wool, which both covers the human body and is manipulated by it, often resembling mist, cloud formations and shifting skies. The wool carries many potential meanings, and Vega is happy for each viewer to have her/his own interpretation of the film. This screening will be accompanied by a live musical performance. For more information on The Watermill Center, contact Blake Zidell at Blake Zidell & Associates, 718-643-9052 or blake@blakezidell.com.
