East End Arts Council Announces Scholarship Winners
The East End Arts Council is pleased to name Amanda Gallo, a sophomore attending Riverhead High School as the 2009 music scholarship recipient of the Paul Sisson Memorial Fund. The Paul Sisson Memorial Fund was created by the Friends of the Riverhead Free Library in memory of Paul Sisson, a lover of classical music and driving force in the development of the Library's Piano Plus Concert Series. This is the eighth year an East End Arts Council School of the Arts music student has been awarded a scholarship through the generous support of the Friends of Riverhead Free Library. Gallo began studying piano at the School of the Arts in 2001 with Ellis Pelham and feels that he helped pave the way for her to learn other instruments. Gallo says, "Music seems to come naturally to me." She has consistently received perfect or near perfect scores on her NYSSMA solos. In the fifth grade, Gallo began studying violin at school and then privately at the School of the Arts with James Lewin. As a member of her school orchestra, in 2007 she was honored with the Directors Award Medal. In 2008, Gallo began teaching herself the basics of guitar before starting private lessons at the School of the Arts with instructor Erik Blydenburgh. In addition to her musical studies, Gallo has attended EEAC visual arts and theatre classes, Chamber Ensemble, Youth Choir and Renaissance Kid Camp to which she returned as a junior camp counselor. This past summer, Gallo was a member of the pit orchestra for North Fork Community Theatre's production of "Guys & Dolls." In addition, Gallo is a member of Riverhead High School's theatre club, Blue Masques, Science Club and NJROTC. Gallo is currently taking music theory classes at high school, has enjoyed teaching music to some of her friends, and plans to pursue a career in Music Education and/or Jazz Studies, but would also enjoy becoming a professional pit musician. "Whatever I end up doing," says Gallo, "it will involve music, because it's been with me since I was a child and my love for it will never fade." The Paul Sisson scholarship will allow her to continue her piano studies with her teacher, Julia Den Boer at the EEAC School of the Arts.

Rus Halsey plays with the EEAC Chamber Ensemble.

Nazrus "Rus" Halsey was selected as East End Arts Council's Frances Ligon Memorial Scholarship winner. Halsey is from Flanders, and this scholarship was inaugurated in 2007 by the East End Arts Council in honor of the memory of Frances Ligon, who served on the Board of Directors for the Arts Council from 2005-2007 and was a well-known advocate for the arts and education of youth throughout the East End community, as well as an active gospel vocalist in several local choirs. Halsey is a ninth grade student at Riverhead High School who first began playing the upright bass in the fifth grade. He has already achieved a NYSSMA level five with a score of "Excellent." Halsey began studying bass at the School of the Arts in July of 2007. His passion for music led him to add electric bass, drums and piano to his music studies. Halsey says that coming to the School of the Arts has been an encouragement to him because he has "learned a lot from his wonderful teacher Stan Wright!" Halsey also participates in the School of the Arts Chamber Ensemble under the direction of James Lewin, and most recently participated in the School of the Arts RYTHM Program where he worked with a group of music students to write, perform and record an original piece of music under the guidance of EEAC recording engineer, Clifton Torres. In addition to his music, Halsey is active in his church youth group where does volunteer community service work and with whom he enjoys playing flag football on Saturdays.

Watermill Center Upcoming Events
In a Watermill Center fall residency taking place a collective of artists from various fields Charles Chemin, the architect Christian Wassman and the producer Luisa Gui Futurism's complex relationship to the modern body. They will present a work-in-progress showing of the work on Monday, October 26 at 6 p.m. This presentation offers a preview of a PERFORMA09 performance of the work at the Teatro of The Italian Academy on November 11, which will inaugurate the symposium Beyond Futurism: F.T. Marinetti, Writer, organized by Paolo Valesio and the Department of Italian at Columbia University. In its free exploration of Futurism¹s ambiguous vitality, Girlmachine focuses on notions of masculine identity and mechanized erotics. The performance unfolds an associative journey through various texts ranging from Futurist poetry and manifestos to contemporary sources, through the neo-Renaissance-style, Teatro. Taking as its main focus certain conceits of Futurist masculinity as hyperbole, the work is an adaptation of Una Parentesi Luminosa, by Marella Caracciolo Chia. Fragments, vibrant tableaux, still and moving images, silence and orchestrated words, repeated and sudden actions, bodies, voices, decor, lights, and texts all create layers that could erect or destroy in an antagonistic escalation. Girlmachine is being created by a collective of highly accomplished and eclectic artists who met and first conceived the work as participants in the Watermill Summer Program, under the artistic leadership of Robert Wilson. They are continuing their collaboration as Watermill fall artists-in-residence. Soto was recently an artist-in-residence residence at Kampnagel and served as costume designer for Robert Wilson's KOOL co-produced and co-commissioned by the Guggenheim¹s Works & Process and Guild Hall in East Hampton. Chemin is a French performer and director who is currently working as Assistant Director to Robert Wilson on Samuel Beckett's Krapp¹s Last Tape. Wassman is a Swiss architect and designer of artistic installations, NYC interiors and new homes in the Hamptons and Miami. Gui, who was born in Rome, is a curator and producer of visual art, performance and film projects based in NYC, including work with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

In a Watermill Center fall residency taking place October 15 through October 28, the Danish artist Birgitte Moos is undertaking a study of theatrical set design that will ultimately become a book about the effects of abstract imagery on her art form. She will give a talk on Tuesday, October 27 at 6 p.m. From challenging gravity to creating a language through non-realistic imagery, Revolutionary Spaces will explore the interaction of the audience and the stage. Moos questions how and where the viewer experiences recognition and intuitive understanding of the content of a performance as it relates to the environment of the action on the stage. Moos is a Danish artist, based in Copenhagen and Los Angeles. A conceptual painter and set designer, she holds an MFA from the National Design School of Denmark. Her work has been shown in various venues and exhibited internationally at numerous galleries. Recently, she designed the set and costumes for Theatre Cantabile2 in Copenhagen and had a solo exhibition at Edgar Varela Fine Arts in Los Angeles. For more information go to www.birgittemoos.com.
