New York City - Dorfman Projects is pleased to present "Night Party: Shooting Stair," the first annual event that brings friends together outside of the gallery to celebrate new work and additions to programs. The title piece for this event is a light installation by Brooklyn based artist
Raphaele Shirley. Also featured is a new sculptural installation by
Mia Feuer and two videos by
Eve Sussman.
The focal point of the evening, "Shooting Stair," is a sculptural installation commissioned by Dorfman Projects and created by Shirley that combines lasers, water fog, and the changing features of its environment. For this work, Shirley mingles the spatial clarity and structure of minimalism with the ephemeral, virtual qualities of new media and technology. Using the lasers to draw lines and planes in space, she constructs both the real, architectural space of the stairs and the changing, imagined space into which they extend.

Diller & Scofidio's Blur Building, with its weather contingent mist, was a major source of inspiration for "Shooting Stair." In Shirley's work however, the idea of a tangible, habitable structure is instead transformed into concept and possibility. As with many contemporaries such as
Jeppe Hein,
Rafael Lozano Hemmer, and
Spencer Finch, Shirley's work aims to capture elusive, enigmatic subjects and phenomena and document them via the finite, quantitative renderings of new media and technology. Her work examines real and imagined histories, memories, spaces, and the complexities of perception. Upcoming projects include "Jewels of Kvinesdal," a 30-foot diameter multimedia sculpture and outdoor public art commission to be installed in the south of Norway, opening November 2009.
