Films By Michael Cardacino To Be Screened
On Friday, Sept. 18, artist
Michael Cardacino will screen "To Deny What Is And To Explain What Is Not," "Paris Hilton's Burning Thoughts," and "The Candidates March," which addresses concepts that are both personal and political in nature at the Pollack-Krasner House (830 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton, 631-324-4929). He transplants photographic montages taken from the television screen or computer monitor to create video portraits of celebrities, including
Barack Obama,
Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. His process causes the images to become, as he puts it, "the movement of thought itself." This year's "Artists on Film" series of short motion pictures by artists at the
Pollock-Krasner House is titled "Artists Make Movies: Personal and Political." The series is hosted by film historian and art critic
Marion Wolberg Weiss. The films will be screened on Fridays at 7 p.m. in September, and the artists will present and discuss their work. Admission is $5, or free for Pollock-Krasner House members. No reservations are required.

"2006.5.1" by Chinese artist Fang Lijun is part of the exhibit "Chasing Flames," which is on display at Eli Klein Fine Art in Manhattan. |
Chasing Flames At Eli Klein Fine Art
The title of this exhibition refers to the booming Contemporary Chinese Art market which has seen unprecedented growth in recent years and has blazed a trail for contemporary Asian art throughout the world. The works of these artists spans the three-decade history of Chinese contemporary art and reflect the shifts in narrative from the critical art of the 1985 New Wave post-Cultural Revolution, to the more sarcastic works of Cynical Realism and Political Pop post-Tiananmen, to the increasingly self-reflective pieces that characterize more recent years as artists respond to profound socio-economic changes, consumerism and globalization, while attempting to define their individuality in a rapidly-changing reality. The exhibition will be divided into two parts on two floors: paintings will be showcased on the first gallery level and a collection of the artists' new print productions will be on display in the lower level. This exhibition will be on view at Eli Klein Fine Art (462 West Broadway, New York, 212-255-4388) from Sept. 17 through Nov. 15.
Roots At The Robin Rice Gallery
The Robin Rice Gallery (325 West 11 Street, New York, 212-366-6660) announces "Roots", a solo exhibition of 14 digital X-ray images by artist and photographer
Steve Miller. The opening reception will be held on Sept. 16. The show runs through Oct. 25. While all photography arrests motion, it is only the X-ray that allows us to climb inside a particular moment and subject and parse the structure of its beauty from within. Steve Miller's X-ray photographs, 13 black and white carbon on cotton prints and one glass plate mounted on steel, do the trick. Miller's work lifts the lid off a hidden domain, revealing the stilled and remarkable innards of things we pass by every day.
