Landscape Design Meets Art At The Leiber Garden

Krysten Massa

Gerson Leiber has a passion and talent for designing gardens. In 1956, he purchased more than 7 acres of land on Old Stone Highway in Springs, with his wife famed handbag designer Judith Leiber, and began to transform the land into art.

Though this project took him several years to complete, it was well worth the wait. The vision started with clearing the land, which was followed by finding the ideal mix of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, putting down brick walkways, erecting gates, placing sculptures, and planting an extensive vegetable and herb garden.

"I have been deeply affected by the gardens I have visited throughout the world, my favorite being Versailles, as well as by those I have imagined and dreamed of over the course of more than 50 years," Leiber said.

The Leiber Gardens, which is open to the public, has been admired and praised by visitors since the property's opening. Each of the gardens within the property has their own personality and themes to them, like the sculpture garden, with serpentine paths and the sculptures spread throughout. From the top, it would look like a detailed art maze.

Admission to the Leiber Gardens is free. The gardens are open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., through Labor Day.

The Leiber Gardens is located at 446 Old Stone Highway in Springs. For more information, visit www.leibermuseum.org.

Hampton Luxury Liner
Hampton Luxury Liner was started in 2000 as a more luxurious way to travel from NYC to the Hamptons and back. The clientele quickly grew and over the years Hampton Luxury liner became the preferred method of transportation to the Hamptons and NYC for many living in NYC and the Hamptons that wanted a comfortable and affordable way to travel back and forth. In 2009, HLL was taken over by Classic Coach and things with the liner didn’t change to much for years and the owner there changed the buses to Prevost as opposed to Mercedes Setra Top Class Coaches that have always been a signature of the liner.
