Sag Harbor - The familiar "Legs" sculpture on the side of the home of two Hamptons art dealers has reached new heights with the recent order to remove the sculpture.
Village Zoning Board of Appeals issues letter from the village building inspector saying that the "Legs" must come down.
The sculpture, by well-known American artist
Larry Rivers, who died in 2002, has been on display for two years, and stands 16 feet, one inch high on the side of a former Baptist church. Now the part time home of The Vered Gallery's (located in East Hampton)
Janet Lehr, and
Ruth Vered, who own the sculpture, Lehr has issued the following Letter to the Editor:
"A very unmerry Christmas letter just arrived from the Town of Sag Harbor. This is a January Raid. When the snows fall, and the weather is chill, do they think no one will protest. For travelers without a GPS, 'turn at the legs,' was sufficient direction to bring people into town. Who is the Grinch, who is he or she, stealing Hamptonites pleasure?"

Solstice says:
The Legs really ARE a landmark, at this point! Why not leave them where they are?
