Riverhead - The judges of in the 2011 Downtown Riverhead Summer Photo Contest announced three winners out of almost 500 entries, and they gave three more photos honorable mention. Two of the three winners and one of the three honorable mentions captured evening scenes. Also selected were shots of downtown court buildings, hula hooping, and a summer day on Main.

In a departure from the first two years of the Downtown Riverhead Summer Photo Contest, this year's contest results did not reflect any public voting. Five judges decided the winners based on overall quality, creativity, composition or technical quality, memorable content and delivery, and expression of Riverhead's identity. There were no categories this year. Pictures had to be taken between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, 2011 in the downtown area (which was not specified). Photographers uploaded all submissions to the contest group on Flickr.com.


The five judges were: award-winning photographer Steve Berger, Art Sites Gallery owner Glynis Berry, Riverhead Free Library Director Lisa Jacobs, East End Arts Council Executive Director, Patricia Snyder, and iloveriverhead Founder Nancy Swett.

The photographs will be used exclusively by the contest organizers to promote downtown Riverhead through next summer. Winning photographers will receive award certificates and cash prizes made possible with support from the Riverhead Rotary Club, and the photos will be displayed in showcase at the Riverhead Free Library during the month of January 2012. The contest was organized by Lisa Jacobs, Director of the Riverhead Free Library, and Nancy Swett, Founder of I Love Riverhead, a group established in 2009 focused on downtown Riverhead.

"I'm thrilled to see that local photographers were able to see the beauty in downtown Riverhead," said Jacobs. "The town is vibrant and alive, and the photo contest entries are living proof."
