Costa: Shinnecock Hills Painter at 17 Meeting House Lane in Southampton on Saturday, January 22, with a reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. The exhibition will run through April 30, 2011, and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, Costa (1926-2005) lived in Shinnecock Hills and painted his friends and surroundings in a highly styled manner that leaves the viewer with a feeling of delight. A book on his life and work has recently been published by his wife Judith Ann Costa. Born in Brooklyn in 1923, he developed a talent in art early in childhood by winning awards in exhibits in Lincoln High School. He became a member of the Lincoln Art Squad and worked with noted artists Alexander Calder and Jacque Lipschitz. He attended Black Mountain College, headed by Hans Hoffman, and earned a degree from Pratt Institute. His first job was in the art department at Conde Nast and went on to be Art Director and a Vice President at Grey Advertising. Costa's artwork has been on exhibit at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum, Grace Gallery, National Art League, Parrish Art Museum and many others. During his career he was a recipient of many art awards for advertising design and fine art. He maintained studios and homes for many decades in both New York City and Shinnecock Hills.

Romany Kramoris Gallery
The Romany Kramoris Gallery (41 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-2499) is pleased to announce a limited number of new works by Sag Harbor artist Christopher Engel entitled "Numinous II." The show will run through January. The new works are a continuation of Engel's "Numinous" series that were on display this past summer at Romany Kramoris Gallery. "Numinous," a word coined by Rudolf Otto in his book "The Idea of the Holy" (c.1916), is explained as "a non-rational, non-sensory experience or feeling whose primary and immediate object is outside the self." In the "numinous" experience, a person feels to be in communion with a "holy" other. This experience connects to a communication with deities, the supernatural, the sacred, the holy and the transcendent. These are all themes that Engel includes in his work. Also included in the show are gallery artists Laura Rozenberg with her "La Boca" series, Shey Wolvek's "La Duquesa de Alba" series, outsider art by Jorge Silveira and handmade jewelry by Debi Zum. The Gallery is open seven days a week throughout the holiday season from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and open late weekends.

Southampton Cultural Center's Levitas Center For The Arts
"Sculpture in Welded Steel" - a collection of recent abstract sculptures executed in welded steel by Water Mill sculptor Don Saco will be on view from January 6 through January 31. There will be an Opening Reception held on Saturday, January 8, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Gallery Hours are 12 noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Over a span of nearly five decades Saco's sculpture has been included in countless museum, group and solo exhibits in this country and abroad. His 16th one-man show, a retrospective of more than 40 figurative and abstract sculptures was presented at the Southampton Cultural Center in 2007. It proved to be a landmark success with collectors and critics. Since moving to Water Mill in 2003, Saco's work has evolved from the figurative to the abstract. But still, the human dynamics that animate his forceful figures are equally evident in these nonrepresentational pieces. Volume and mass are not static but seem infused with the suppressed power of steel that commands space and is poised for movement. Shapes are defined by line and suggest motion that may ascend effortlessly or be engaged in taut linear dialogue as in the work titled "Tension." While some pieces soar skyward ("Ascent I"), others, like "Woodwinds" repose in lyrical ease. Musical metaphor lends itself readily to these expressive and emotionally charged works.
