This Week In Arts

Week Of November 29

Artist Robert Verdi. (All images courtesy of artists and galleries)

Westhampton Free Public Library
Artist Robert Verdi will show another side of his multi-faceted talent with a solo exhibition of his newest abstract acrylic paintings at the Westhampton Free Library, 7 Library Avenue, Westhampton Beach Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Carolyn Kendall Buchter and Diiana Oliver Steinberg will host a Special Reception with the artist on Friday, December 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. which will benefit The Library's programs. In addition to donating one of his large scale paintings to the Library, the artist is donating a generous percentage of sales. The exhibition will highlight new piece from his very popular "Barn Series" as well as a new group of bold, eye-popping abstract paintings. Verdi's "Barn Series" paintings of barns and farmhouses in New England and on the East End are contemporary American documents. At heart, Verdi is a purist/constructivist. Verdi paints with acrylic on canvas. He obtains tonal depth, texture and profound color saturation with this often blunt and lifeless medium. He has an innate sense of place and volume; of how a building "sits" on a site and how sky and ground delimit and enhance his personality filled barns. His paintings have the power to stay in the mind's eye long after viewing them. Most recently his painting has taken on a more abstract expressionistic turn and he is creating powerful, boldly colored images that are a visual feast for the eye. A child prodigy who began painting when he was only six years old, the artist rose to fame first in the world of high fashion as a photographer, stylist and makeup artist for the top fashion magazines working with the most creative talents of the time, including the iconic photographer Richard Avedon and legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland. Contributing regularly to the pages of major fashion magazines as a photographer, stylist and make-up artist, he worked with all the top designers and refined his photographic style working with such famed photographers such as Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton and Bert Stern. For the past nine years Verdi has directed most of his creative energies to painting. He now uses acrylics, which he dries with a salon hair dryer and continues to work in photography and sculpture. Rosalie Dimon Gallery
The East End Arts Council and Jamesport Manor Inn present a new two person art exhibit from November 5 through February 3. There will be an Opening Reception on Sunday, December 5 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Whether it's a woman in a hooded outfit covered with buttons - a bird perched on her finger as she overlooks a classic Florentine-like landscape, or a rendition of dying flowers bowing gracefully toward a table, the paintings by Anna Jurinich have a haunting beauty not easily forgotten. Jurinich's work has appeared in many group shows, a solo show at Hampton Road Gallery, on the cover of Dan's Papers, the Hecksher Museum and many private collections on the East End. Also exhibiting is Nick Cordone with a series of acrylic paintings that pose philosophical questions concerning farm animals and what they may or may not be pondering. Painted with precision and skill, Cordone's quirky art is whimsical and thought-provoking. His work has also appeared on the cover of Dan's Papers and many other East End venues. He has exhibited in the NYC Art Expo and has also had art work purchased for private and corporate collection both here and abroad. Exhibits at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery are a joint effort by the East End Arts Council and the Jamesport Manor Inn to introduce exceptional artists and their work to the East End Communities.

"The Jackson Pollock Box," an art kit for young people published by Cider Mill Press and distributed by Simon & Schuster, is designed to illuminate Pollock and his creative process. Inside the box are materials for projects based on Pollock's techniques, including stain painting, gesture drawing and collage, and a lavishly illustrated 103 page book by Pollock-Krasner House director Helen A. Harrison that provides an intimate, accessible introduction to the artist and his art. In addition to discussing Pollock's life and work, and his relationship with Lee Krasner, the book features his own explanations of what he was doing, and a selection of critical pros and cons. There is also a chapter on the importance of his move to Springs, where his art underwent a radical breakthrough that was strongly influenced by his rural surroundings and the natural environment. According to Museum of Modern Art director Glenn D. Lowry, "Ms. Harrison weaves together the rich strands of Pollock and Krasner's lives, processes and art practices with stories and images that will engage readers of all ages." Harrison will be signing copies of the box at The Golden Eagle art supply store in East Hampton from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, and at Guild Hall in East Hampton at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 18.
