Kathryn Markel Fine Arts
Kathryn Markel Fine Arts (Main Street, Bridgehampton) will present
Matthew Denton Burrows, a 21-year-old emerging artist, born and raised in NYC, who has spent his summers in Sagaponack. This will be his Hamptons debut, and there will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Presently a senior at Lehigh University, Matthew had his first ever one-man show at the University's Girdler Gallery. His work was shown this summer in Brooklyn and Easton, PA and is currently exhibited at the ISE Cultural Foundation in SoHo. Inspired by the capability of incessant observation - mostly in his native New York, but also in such untypical locales as Moscow, Reykjavik, and the western U.S. His talent is perhaps best described by his professor and mentor, Berrisford Boothe, in the preface to Matthew's new book "Everything At Any Moment." Prof. Boothe writes "The inexhaustible fuel that powers Matthew's visual ideas is a remarkable ability for focused observation in a limitless sea of content." Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center
Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center (830 Springs-Fireplace Road, East Hampton, 631-324-4929, www.pkhouse.org) will present "Jackson and Lee, August 1953: Photographs by Tony Vaccaro," will be on view from July 29 through October 30. In August 1953, on assignment for
Look magazine, the photographer
Tony Vaccaro visited
Jackson Pollock and
Lee Krasner at their home in Springs. He photographed the two artists in the house and the barn studio, where the couple chatted with neighbors and Pollock discussed his paintings in progress. The
Look article was never published, and color film from the photo shoot that was turned over to the magazine's editor has been lost. Fortunately Vaccaro kept the black and white film, from which the 21 prints in this exhibition are taken. Few of them have been published, and many have never before been printed. They complement the small selection of Vaccaro's images on view in the permanent exhibition inside the Pollock-Krasner studio. There will be a reception and gallery talk by Vaccaro on Sunday, August 1 at 5 p.m. Although his pictures have appeared in publications worldwide for more than 60 years, he is primarily known for his images of World War II. While serving in the U.S. Army's 83rd Infantry Division in Europe, he became an official photographer for the division's newspaper. After the war, he worked first as a photographer for the U.S. authorities and later for
Stars and Stripes. He continued to document post-war life in Europe until 1949, when he returned to the United States and began working for
Life,
Look and
Flair magazines, photographing many prominent figures in politics, business and the arts. A book of his wartime photographs, Entering Germany: Photographs 1944-1949, was published in 2001. The exhibition is free with museum admission. July and August hours: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission $5. One guided tour at 12 noon, reservations required. $10 paid in advance. September-October hours: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, by appointment only. Guided tours on the hour, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., $10, paid in advance. For reservations and information, call 631-324-4929.

Sylvester & Co
Sylvester & Co (154 Main Street, Amagansett, 631-267-9777, info@sylvesterathome.com) will present paintings by
Mark Saltz from July 31 through August 31. There will be an opening reception held on Saturday, July 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. JHB Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of paintings by Saltz at Sylvester & Co. Saltzʼ;s large works, in oil on linen, are the culmination of many layers of added and subtracted paint. Mixing his own pigments, the artist builds up his canvases in various viscosities using long handled brushes. The dried layers are then scraped back - sometimes even power-sanded - to reveal complex and subtle color contrasts and weathered textures, before further layers of paint are applied. Though entirely abstract, the resulting works, with their richly patinated surfaces and naturalistic light, retain strongly specific associations of atmospheric conditions and emotive states of mind. Saltzʼ; work has been shown in many museums and galleries over the past 40 years, including Tobey Fine Arts, A.I.R. Gallery, The Drawing Center, and the New Museum, New York, as well as Cornerhouse, Manchester, England, and the Weatherspoon Gallery, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, NC. His work is in the public collections of The Brooklyn Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, New York Public Library, and the Weatherspoon Gallery, NC, among others. The gallery is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Fireplace Project
The Fireplace Project is pleased to present the next exhibition, "Self Portraits," by The Bruce High Quality Foundation from July 30 through August 16. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Bruce High Quality Foundation, the official arbiter of the estate of the late social sculptor
Bruce High Quality, is the single largest exhibition of the artist's signature series to date. Best known for a seemingly boundless inventiveness upending all previous distinctions between aesthetic and social life, Bruce High Quality simultaneously maintained a quieter, more inward looking practice. Over the course of hundreds of self-portraits, Quality interrogated the foundations of his own identity. Insinuating his image-cum-icon into the history of popular culture, art history, and private imagery, the artist used the problematic of his own existence to metonymically reveal the tenuous footholds of truth, history, and humanity. Now, with the inclusion of recent works by The Bruce High Quality Foundation inspired by Quality's perennial self-investigation, "Self Portraits" promises to be the definitive exhibition for those seeking to experience this singularly important body of the artist's work. The gallery is located in the former Talmage garage at 851 Springs Fireplace Road, in the Springs historic district, across from the Pollock-Krasner House, 631-324-4666, www.thefireplaceproject.com.
