This Week In Arts

Week Of July 12

Artwork by Gabriele Roos.

The Fireplace Project
The Fireplace Project (851 Springs Fireplace
Road, East Hampton, 631-324-4666, www.thefireplaceproject.com) is pleased to present the next exhibition, "The Radiant Guest", an exhibit by two artists, Paul P., and Scott Treleaven from July 9 through July 26. There will be an opening reception held on Saturday, July 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Treleaven's and P.'s works illustrate a bold fascination with perceptual shifts. Overall they share an obfuscating quality, one that increases the depth of perception or sensation - out of the murk emerge clearer, unexpected ideas. In P.'s case, it's a response to natural phenomenon – mists, dusks, sunsets and sunrises, light on water, the anonymous model. Treleaven employs a combination of collage and traditional photographic techniques to create uncanny vignettes and fleeting rendezvous of figures and shadow. P. will exhibit new painting, Treleaven will exhibit new collage photographic works.

Juried Sculpture Garden Exhibition Opens At Brecknock Hall
Peconic Landing and the East End Arts Council's first annual juried outdoor Sculpture Garden Exhibition will take place July 18 through September 26 on the grounds of Brecknock Hall, the restored 19th century manor home on Peconic Landing's campus. The featured works complement and enhance the unique building and garden setting of historic Brecknock Hall. The Sculpture Garden Exhibition will be free and open to the public on weekends only, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays July 18 through September 26. Exhibiting artists are Dan Bergman, Steven Ceraso, Stephen Fabrico, Geoff Feder, Jack Howard-Potter, Jayne Johnes, Christopher Lewis, Rob Lohrenson, Zoran Luka, Molly Mason, Avital Oz, Donald Saco, Robert Strimban and Steven Zaluski. A Gala Reception under a tent at the Sculpture Garden will be held on Saturday, July 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Guests will meet the sculptors, receive a limited edition exhibition catalog, enjoy the wines of Bedell Cellars, listen to live music and bid at a silent auction featuring many exciting themed packages such as dining at fine restaurants, overnight getaways and theatre tickets. Beebe Windmill in Bridgehampton.

Surface Library
The Surface Library (845 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton, opposite the Pollock-Krasner House in the Springs District, 631-291-9061, www.surfacelibrary.com) will host "Contrasts & Contradictions" - Sculptural and assemblages by Gabriele Roos from July 16 through August 1. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 17, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Roos began her career as a painter and later transitioned in the early 1990s to wall sculpture. Her latest body of work, comprised of luminous white and light colored wooden and concrete wall sculptures, offers poetic encapsulations of the symbols of civilization. Each sculpture in the new series is evocative of a phrase, the words are architectural forms and the sentences add up to a story about survival in an abstract sense. Some sculptures are clearly processional and ceremonial, with primitive totemic qualities that offer a contemplative mood amidst an overactive urban scene.

The Bridgehampton Historical Society
The Bridgehampton Historical Society has announced the "Beebe Windmill Tours" on Fridays: July 16, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, July 23rd, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., August 6, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and August 20, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the southeast corner of Ocean Road and Hildreth Avenues in Bridgehampton. The Bridgehampton Historical Society is honored to be the custodians of the historic Beebe Windmill along with the Town of Southampton. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, residents and visitors can tour this beautifully preserved structure on four Fridays throughout the summer. The windmill was built in 1820 for a retired whaling captain and shipbuilder and has been relocated many times. It finally rests next to the historic Minden Residence on Ocean Road built by John Berwind. Learn more about this gristmill's history and take advantage of the unique opportunity to climb inside during a shady half hour on a summer day. Open to the Public. Free Admission. The Bridgehampton Historical Society is also hosting a summer long art exhibit of work by East End Artists at their Archives location on Montauk Highway, just east of the historic Nathaniel Rogers House which is under restoration. The show is guest-curated by Cynthia Loewen of the Bell'Arte Group who also selects the featured artist every two weeks. On July 17, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., there will be an opening reception celebrating the next featured artist, Robert Budd. Robert is a retired East Hampton middle school teacher and coach who will be exhibiting his woodwork. Robert says when he works in his shop, which his son built for them to share, he is "exposing the wood to show its natural beauty." Robert also paints, but while his watercolors are very precise and detailed, "woodwork is very freeform; it just talks to me." Also exhibiting is the historical society's own Mary Gardner. Mary is showing her series, "Stones" which has been very well received and sold very well. A portion of all sales benefit the society, another great way to show support for this community institution and enjoy local art at the same time. Free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Archives Building, 2539-A Montauk Highway.

Romany Kramoris Gallery
The Romany Kramoris Gallery (41 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-2499, www.KramorisGallery.com) new work by Jorge Silveira. Surprised by the positive response to his show at the Romany Kramoris Gallery last summer, Sag Harbor artist Silveira was inspired to keep going and continue experimenting trying different things. This year he has become more audacious, sometimes even being surprised where his creativity has taken him. "I'm an insecure artist" says Silveira, "I just started doing this because I love to do it, but now that people embrace my art and like it, I feel more energetic and able to let my imagination go. So I think this upcoming show is expressing my audacious imagination, without as much self-editing as I used to do." Silveira likes old objects, especially old wooden objects which he's inspired to mix with acrylic paint and pieces of found rusty metal into monsters and faces. He's also been using other found materials like burlap. "I really like expressing my creativity by finding discarded objects from the forest and the ocean, and turning them into raw and abstract characters or scenes," he says. Coming from Uruguay, a small country in South America, where everything gets repaired and reused such as old cars from the 1940s and refrigerators that get fixed 20 times before they're replaced, it surprises him how much material he can pick up on the beach and in nature that has been thrown away by people. It makes him feel good that he can pick up these objects and give them another life. His work will be on view from July 15 to August 5 with a special reception on Saturday, July 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The gallery is open seven days from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Michael Perez Pop Art Gallery
Discerning members of the art world will be celebrating the opening of The Michael Perez Pop Art Gallery at the breathtaking 16 Minetta Lane townhouse-turned-gallery in Greenwich Village. New York born Perez is one of the hottest pop artists of his time, and he is going back to his roots. Born in Midtown, Manhattan, he first sold his paintings in Washington Square Park at the age of 17. Along with his own work, the event will feature celebrated indie author Wanda Shapiro and her debut novel "Sometimes That Happens With Chicken." You may have seen a Michael Perez painting at the Central Perk Café on the set of the hit series "Friends," or seen him paint live on the Weekend "Today Show" or on News 12 Long Island. Maybe you saw one of the seven cows he painted for the New York City Cow Parade. His work can be immediately recognized by its distinctive women's figures and faces, dancing daisies, and happy nature scenes. His fans include discerning global art collectors and celebrities alike, and his pop art masterpieces can be found in the collections of Billy Joel, Chris Rock, Aretha Franklin and the Hilton family. The art on display for the opening will include classic pieces from Michael's personal collection, along with brand new works from his 2010 series, giving fans an opportunity to see paintings that have previously been available by appointment only. The collection will include highlights from many of Michael's distinctive periods with work dating back to 1986. Perez has already received a warm reception from the Greenwich Village community in which this architecturally distinct townhouse is nestled. The open windows and doors of the gallery residence, at the previously hidden-away townhouse of the recluse (late) Robert Isabell, are a welcomed addition to the art-minded neighborhood and a hopeful sign, during a recession, of a venue which Perez will use to support the art community. Open to the public, this event will be a first look for many upon the property and upon Perez's first official contribution to his new community, in which Michael is proud to be able to continue his tradition of giving back to the world through art. There will be pieces on display from guest artists, Michael is inspired by Shapiro's indie literature plan and her onegirlonenovel.com platform. For more information regarding Wanda Shapiro go to www.onegirlonenovel.com or contact the author directly at onegirlonenovel@gmail.com. In addition to opening The Michael Perez Pop Art Gallery at 16 Minetta Lane in the Village, Michael has reached out to art lovers with galleries in the Hamptons and in Miami and will be opening a studio gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn this summer. Having recently had a successful live denim painting event at Saks Fifth Avenue, Michael is working with Bloomingdales to plan several similar events at area locations. For additional artist and press-related information contact publicist Caitlin E. Slayback at info@michaelperezgallery.com.

Artwork on view at Richard Demato Fine Arts Gallery.

Richard J. Demato Fine Arts Gallery
The Richard J. Demato Fine Arts Gallery (90 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-1161, art@rjdgallery.com) will present aritsts Andrea Kowch and Jeff Aeling. There will be an opening reception held on Saturday, July 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kowch will distribute signed copies at the opening of her new comprehensive book for all those making purchases. Kowch was born in Michigan, where she received her BFA at the College for Creative Studies. Largely self-taught and influenced by the work of American Masters and the Old Masters of the Renaissance, her paintings and illustrations are best known for their rich symbolism, mood, and control of medium, leading her to be described as a "powerful voice emerging, demonstrating a highly sensitive consciousness that informs a culturally laced symbolism." Her work has been defined "American Magic Realism" and the influences of a Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper, and others is clearly apparent. A winner of numerous regional, national, and international honors for her art, she has had work exhibited in Washington D.C.'s Capitol Hill and Corcoran Gallery of Art, New York City's Diane von Furstenberg Gallery, and Miami's Margulies Collection, before the age of 20. She is also a 2005 award winner and alumnus of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, an honor which ranks her among the top two percent of young American talent. Aeling was born in1958 and currently resides in both Kansas City and Hawaii, where he surfs and paints three months of the year. His interests in painting and surfing were found young, while his father, a prominent Army Surgeon, and his family were all stationed there. He is best known for his expansive and emotional landscapes and his travels take him throughout most of rural America, with a particular interest and ability to capture nature and our complex weather changes. He has been called an "anatomist of clouds" and he understands and paints their complexity, density, and how the light interacts within the complex layers resultant of the "wind speed, temperature, and moisture from layer to layer." This new show will include works done for the very first time, following a recent visit earlier this year, specifically of the Hampton's and our preserves, estuaries, and waterways; and will include Mecox, Georgica, Sagaponack Beach, Montauk, Sag Harbor, and Bridgehampton. He has been painting since childhood and is included in numerous museums, public institutions, and collections throughout the world.
