Springs - Hampton Bays' Angel Rojas doesn't shoot for a time or for the win necessarily. He thrives on competition. In the 33rd Annual Great Bonac 10K Foot Race, Rojas received just the push he needed.

The 23-year-old added another victory to his lengthy resume, triumphing over hard-charging James Consiglio and a field of 119 en route to capturing first place in the 10-kilometer race, which began and ended at the Springs Fire House, one of its beneficiaries. Rojas' time topped the 36:42 he registered at the Run For Ron 10K in Amagansett, at which he also took first. Rojas said he is gearing up for the Flying Point 10K this weekend but is passing on the Hamptons Marathon and Half Marathon, which takes place in the final weekend of September.

Hampton Bays' Angel Rojas captured first place in the 10K with a time of 36 minutes flat.

For the women, Heather Fives of Centerport was first across the line and ranked fourth overall. She won her division by more than three minutes, beating out Southampton's Lauren Laviola (41:47) who took second. Fourteen-year-old Luci Cooke of East Hampton was third (42:54), Sharon Zuhoski ranked fourth (43:24) and East Hampton's Sharon McCobb finished fifth in 43:40.

The course started on Fort Pond Boulevard, took the pack of runners to Gardiners Bay and then north toward Norfolk Drive. The crowd then bent south onto Springs Fireplace Road before turning right and arriving back at the fire house.

The 5K also drew a sizable crowd, starting farther west on Fort Pond Boulevard, guided the runners to Maidstone Park and back. Rolling Thunder, a team of developmentally disabled runners based in central Suffolk County, placed four runners in the top five, including Shirley's Steven Cuomo, who roared to first place in the race with a time of 18:16. Cuomo beat out teammates Marcus Sanders (2nd; 18:35), Mike Brannigan (4th; 19:07) and Brandon Wyman (5th; 19:43). Sandwiched between them was Amagansett's Mike Bahel, who posted a time of 18:48.

Wyman and Cuomo indicated that they run almost on a weekly basis and Cuomo said he particularly enjoys racing because he "likes to go really fast."

East Hampton's Laura Byrnes finished just out of the top five overall, taking eighth, but her time of 21:02 did fetch her first place in the women's division. Of the locals, Wainscott's Patty Conigliaro took third (22:06), East Hampton's Renee Meier was fourth (22:40) and Montauk's Alex Keogh grabbed fifth (22:59).

Race proceeds were split between the Springs Fire Department and the Springs Scholarship Fund, which is awarded annually to a highly regarded East Hampton High graduate hailing from Springs. In the past, as much as $10,000 were given to each entity. The race was put on by the Old Montauk Athletic Club, which helps fund athletic ventures in the community, including at East Hampton and Pierson High School. OMAC President John Connor, who started the race more than three decades ago with Howard Lebwith and Ed Hults, could not confirm just how much was raised with the races on Monday but was pleased that the tradition is alive and well.

"It's a good no-nonsense race," O'Connor said. "It's a great challenge. Everyone a good time with it."

Guest (Bruce A. Bates) from Springs says:
The Great Bonac Foot Race is put on by the Springs Fire Department & the Old Montauk Athletic Club. The proceeds of the race(s) are evenly split between SFD & OMAC. The SFD proceeds go solely to their Scholarship Fund, and the OMAC proceeds go to their Atletic Grants Program.
