Rojas, Brown Roll To First Place Finish In Second Annual Run For Ron 10K

The East Hampton Rotary raised money for East End Hospice, which treated Rotary Treasurer Ron Morgan in the final days of his life in 2007.

Amagansett - For the second straight year, the East Hampton Rotary organized the Run For Ron 10K in Amagansett, commemorating one of its own, Ron Morgan, who lost his battle with cancer in October 2007. On his behalf, nearly 150 runners and walkers assembled along Dennistown Bell Park for the race, powering through the streets north of Montauk Highway and headed back toward the park.

Hampton Bays' Angel Rojas finished in the top position with a time of 36:42. He was one of five racers to come in under 40 minutes. Montauk's Kai Costanzo of Kai-Kai Sandals held off New York's Julian Trisco for second place; Costanzo completed the 6.2 mile trek in 38:55, finishing six seconds ahead of Trisco. Tim Armstrong and Kevin Barry were neck and neck down to the last few hundred yards; Armstrong took fourth in 39:54 while Barry settled for fifth with a time of 39:57.

Laura Brown finished sixth overall in 40:08 but won the female division by a wide margin; second place Lauren Laviola of Southampton came in at the 42:40 mark and took 16th out of the 143 finishers. Brown's winning time was also a minute quicker than that of Barbara Gubbins at last year's race. Rounding out the top five women were New York's Mallory Fratta (43:40; 20th), Oceanside's Maggie O'Brien (45:00; 24th) and Kara Shine of Williston Park (46:08).

Other local runners in the top 10 were East Hampton's Jorge Flores (40:20; 8th) and Amagansett's William Brooks (41:18; 10th). Doroteo Soledad finished 11th in a time of 41:52. Overall, the event experienced a slight increase in enrollment; last year, 137 competitors completed the 10K. Of this year's group, seven were Morgans – Ron III, Scott, Christopher, Ted, Adrienne, Danielle and Dillon.

The run was assembled in honor of Morgan, the Rotary Club's treasurer from its inception in 2005. He was cared for by East End Hospice, the race's primary beneficiary, which provides home health care and short-term hospital stays for those in need.
