Caroline Bierbaum of Southampton leads the women's division by a wide margin as she takes on the race's final mile.

Southampton - He was an unknown in the field of more than 400 registrants at the 18th Annual Firecracker 8K, yet by the time the race was over, it was clear that Colombia's Jorge Real, who currently resides in Queens, was the real deal.

The two-time Colombian national champion made it look easy against an accomplished field of runners, bolting off the starting line and cruising to a first-place finish with a time of 26:58, hitting the finish with a 40-second gap between he and the second-place finisher, 20-year-old Connor McNamara of Baldwin, who stars at Bucknell.

Real was the last person to toe the starting line, keeping his body loose up until the horn sounded to start the northeasterly trot up Jobs Lane before turning right onto South Main Street. It wasn't long before Real, who finished first at the Delaware Marathon in May and is apt to finish well in the New York City Marathon in November, put some distance between him and his competitors. The 37-year-old was all alone as the route hugged Coopers Beach along Meadow Drive and came back inland. Behind Real and McNamara in the men's division were Elmhurst's Julien Berrio (3rd, 28:21), Marco Monjardins of Jackson Heights (5th, 28:55) and New York City's Jonathan Farnham (6th, 29:06).

Real's time was still more than a minute shy of the course record of 25:52, set by last year's champion, Pablo Vega of Spain.

Southampton's own Caroline Bierbaum defended her title on the women's side, placing fourth overall by running a 28:34, nearly a full minute faster than her winning time at last year's race. Last year's runner-up, East Quogue's Tara Farrell, again took second among the women (32:21), only this time Bierbaum beat her by nearly four minutes after a tighter race last year. Sandford, Maine native Rachel Schneider, 16, took third in her Firecracker debut (32:47).

More than 400 entrants headed up Jobs Lane to kick-off the 18th annual Firecracker 8K on Sunday.

Local runners to finish first in their age group included Farrell's father, Lawrence, in the 60-69 male category and Sag Harbor's Blaire Stauffer in the 70-79 bracket. For the women, Westhampton Beach grad and current Hofstra stand-out Mary Sullivan took first in the female 20-24 group; Cassie Spreitzer and Christina Schaefer of Southampton were both within a minute of her winning time of 35:01. Race circuit stalwart Laura Brown of Westhampton Beach took first in the 40-49 division, and Southampton's Jane Kellis was the first in the 70-79 group to cross.

Westhampton Beach resident Amy Hensley hit the finish line just ahead of Southampton's James Bargstel (286) and Liliana Fazendeiro (61), as well as East Quogue's Jerry Koop.

Real and the other competitors enjoyed a divine day for running, hitting the pavement under overcast skies. According to Southampton Rotary President and Race Director Kevin Luss, the exquisite racing conditions contributed to a 25 percent increase in day-of-race enrollment from last year.

"You didn't have to compete against the sun and the beach," Luss said. "It was good running weather between the fog and the cooler temperature. I think that was cause for a lot of people to come out and run."

The 427 runners didn't break the race record for enrollment. Next year they might. On the spot, the car company Audi, in conjunction with Storms Motors in Southampton, agreed to pledge $5,000 to next year's race, which Luss said could institute prize money, possibly $1,000 for first place, which would equal that of June's Shelter Island 10K. It had more than 1,200 racers participate, and like the Firecracker, welcomed runners from all over the world.

The Firecracker's main focus, in addition to putting together a fine event, is raising money for local scholarship funds. Luss estimated that their fundraising dating back to the race's inception totals in the "mid six figures." This year, he said they netted roughly $12,000. Those proceeds go towards the Southampton Rotary Scholarship Fund, and in working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will donate funds toward the global eradication of polio.
