Any first year cheerleader learns the chant, "Let's get fired up!" to get the fans riled up and into the game. But for fans of the East Hampton Bonackers, Long Island Champions two years running, the officials would prefer they stay low-key and polite.
Jeff Thompson, the coach of East Hampton High's first boys swimming team, said during Friday's practice at the Y.M.C.A. East Hampton RECenter that his charges deserved a bit of a rest after having made a splash here in meets with Harborfields and Connetquot.
Going in needing one more win to clinch a playoff spot, the Lady Whalers went into last Friday's game against Southold looking for a measure of revenge, the Lady Settlers sending them home with a 20-point loss in December.
It's been a season of firsts for the East Hampton boys swimming team - first varsity season, first road meet, first victory. On Tuesday night, the Bonackers treated their fans to another first - their first home meet in history. 3 comments Gallery
For so long, the Lady Mariners have talked about their future, but heading into Friday's match-up with Wyandanch, they're right in the thick of the hunt for a playoff spot already.
The Westhampton Beach Dual Meet Tournament is a landmark on the Hurricanes' schedule not only because they wrestle in front of their home crowd, but it's always served as a springboard into the League VI schedule. It vaulted them to historic heights last year, and they're hoping for a similar boost in 2010.
Southampton, East Hampton, Bridgehampton and The Dalton School gathered for a four-game, two-day SYS Holiday Classic that brought those in attendance to their feet.
Oskar Ramirez fell just short of a county championship a year ago, but has used the added motivation to get off to a flying start in the 2009-2010 season.
As a three-year quarterback for the East Hampton football team, Austin Heneveld's statistics certainly jumped off the page, and the figures he put up in the classroom were just as impressive.
The gym at Southampton High School has hosted its share of titanic clashes over the years, and on December 18 and 19, the First Annual Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament will pit four teams looking to make a statement early on in the 2009-10 season.
The Westhampton Beach wrestling team isn't asking for respect. They don't need it to succeed – the Hurricanes' track record is evidence of that. However, they have to wonder why they were mysteriously left off most pre-season rankings.
A quick look around the hardwoods on the East End, beginning with the East Hampton boys, who might not look familiar but the results may.
The fall seasons wrap up with heated playoff action while the winter schedules get underway. A tour around the country reveals that Hampton Bays' Genna Kovar is already raking in postseason accolades while a pair of Bonacker alumni are taking care of business on the college hardwoods as well.
With winter around the corner, there are plenty of items being cooked up in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball hot stove. It's time to go around the horn and examine some of the organization's off-season moves, from wholesale renovations at the Westhampton field to the personnel who are in line to make the summer of 2010 a spectacular one. 2 comments
The Shelter Island girls volleyball team knew that it wasn't unbeatable, even if the sparkling lossless record that it boasted might have suggested so. The Lady Indians had been taken to five games by Stony Brook, put to the test by Haldane, but most of all, previous trips to the state tournament in Glens Falls previewed them on the type of talent they'd undoubtedly cross paths with when the Class D field was down to four. The dream season eventually had to come to an end, for better or worse. SI went toe to toe with three high-caliber squads on Saturday, and although it came away empty-handed, it hardly tarnishes what had been the best season in school history.
November 11 marked National Signing Day for athletes across the country, and three Westhampton Beach standouts - Mark Podlas (baseball), Sophia Geraci (softball) and Kelly Dean (girls lacrosse) - wasted little time making their decisions as they all signed to play at Division I programs in the 2010-2011 school year.
The Lady Bonackers, once down and out trailing two games to none in the Long Island Class A final against Wantagh, were flying high now. With a raucous crowd behind them, they roared back to win 18-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 in a turnaround that was nothing short of spectacular. With the triumphant victory, they were crowned Long Island champs and booked their first trip to the state final four in the program's history. 2 comments
This year, SI was a little stronger, Haldane a little weaker, and it presented a prime opportunity to open some eyes. The Suffolk County Class D champs seized that opportunity and the result was arguably the most significant victory in the program's history. Despite a lapse in game three, the Lady Indians controlled the action and when Kelsey McGayhey drove a set to the floor to seal game four, they celebrated a 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19 victory in the Southeast Regional final. 1 comment
Two teams from East Hampton reached the point that they'd hoped to since the first practice in the pre-season and even before then. The boys soccer squad met a tough match in Comsewogue, the defending state champions, and fell 2-0, but the girls volleyball team made sure Bonac fans weren't entirely disappointed, disposing of Eastport-South Manor to win the Class A county title.
The Lady Baymen had failed in their only previous visit to the county title match in 2004, and first-game jitters surfaced in their return trip against the defending champs. However, the switch flipped early in the second game and HB was on point from then on, posting an impressive 19-25, 25-13, 25-9, 25-16, at St. Joseph's College's John A. Danzi Athletic Center.
