Massapequa - The East Hampton varsity football team participated in the National Football Foundation 7-on-7 Passing Tournament in Massapequa on Saturday and emerged from a solid group of teams as the champion, defeating Long Island Division IV winner Sayville by a pair of touchdowns in the championship game.

In addition to the Bonackers, Sayville, Rocky Point, Kings Park, Kellenberg, St. John the Baptist, Sachem East, Elmont, Locust Valley and Great Neck took part in the tournament run by the NFF, an organization established in 1947 to promote and develop amateur football. East Hampton logged a win over St. John the Baptist in the semifinals before locking horns with Sayville, which rolled past Kings Park. The Golden Flash septet was no match for the Bonackers, who threw their way to the title in convincing fashion.

The varsity team closed with a record of 3-6 but finished up by winning three of its final four games, including a 7-0 win at Harborfields to knock the Tornadoes from the unbeaten ranks. Bonac then blanked Wyandanch 47-0 in their crossover game at the end of the season. East Hampton brings back a strong corps from the 2008 squad, including quarterback Austin Heneveld – who QB'd the 7-on-7 team – as well as RB/LB Nick Jarboe and an experienced offensive line.

Bonac's championship comes four months away from its season opener, a meeting with Eastport-South Manor on Saturday, Sept. 12.

East Hampton toppled St. John the Baptist in the semifinal round before knocking off defending Long Island Division IV champ Sayville in the finals.
