On April 24, 2012, the Bridgehampton High School Boys Varsity Basketball team were honored by Legislator Jay Schneiderman for claiming the title of Class D County Champions.
Legislator Jay Schneiderman honored the Southampton High School Girls Varsity Basketball team on April 24, 2012, who for the first time since 1998 claimed the Suffolk County Class B Champion title.
Vandam, who won the race last year in 55 minutes, two seconds, posted a time of 52:24 in his second go-around through Montauk. He was second out of the water, trailing Springfield's Brian Mulcahey by 39 seconds, yet he built a lead simply in the transition area, beating teammate William Eggers out of the transition area. Close to 300 runners and walkers climbed out of bed Sunday morning and covered the course that began and ended at Flying Point Beach, and in doing so raised nearly $15,000 for the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities located at Stony Brook University. Leading the pack across the finish line was Shelter Island's Bryan Knipfing, who controlled the race from its onset and never relinquished his place. Watch Video
A 27-18 defeat at the hands of Greenport stings -- but at the two-week point of Hampton Bays' movement toward a 2009 playoff berth Head Coach Mike Oestreicher had to like what he saw. "We'll learn this year, we'll learn every week, and we're just going to get better," he commented. "By next year, we're going to be ready to play." Watch Video
It would be premature to call the Lady Bonackers' 4-0 loss to Miller Place a changing of the guard in Suffolk County. They are still the two-time defending Long Island champs, back-to-back-to-back titlists in the county. They'll possess the crowns until they're dethroned.
Jerome Russell, an 18-year-old senior and former basketball star at East Hampton High School, was critically injured and airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after losing control of his Land Rover early Sunday morning. Russell struck a tree along Springs-Fireplace Road. 1 comment
Monday was a historic day in the project's history as HCB's front office revealed the 2009 rosters for the five teams who will call the East End home this summer – the Sag Harbor Whalers, Southampton Breakers, Westhampton Aviators, Riverhead Tomcats and North Fork Ospreys.
Even though the St. Joseph's (PA) women's basketball team would like to forget its season opener, a 86-59 loss to No. 3 Rutgers on Friday, it's not likely that Kelly Cavallo soon will. The freshman forward checked in at the scorer's table with just under six minutes remaining, and although the margin lessened her nervousness substantially, the moment was one that she'd dreamed of long before it occurred. 4 comments
The Lady Bonackers left the second of three heats devoid of drama, powering to their first sub-four-minute relay - a blazing 3:57.26 - to beat Brentwood/Bay Shore by a full three seconds. Although East Hampton fell just shy of qualifying for the state meet - only the top four advance - its fifth-place finish in the event was a sharp upgrade from their ninth-place seeding and seed time of 4:03.36. 2 comments
Never is optimism more abundant than the first day of practice. The same can be said for hopeful grins and the spring in an athletes' step. On Wednesday, Suffolk County schools were given the green light to officially begin preparation for the long winter season, and as is the case every year, athletes and coaches were thrilled to stop talking about the season and start getting ready. 3 comments
Out to enjoy a crisp fall morning in Montauk – or possibly to counteract the likely caloric intake later that afternoon – a record number of runners lined up at the starting line for the 32nd edition of the Thanksgiving Day Three- and Six-Mile Turkey Trots. For the third consecutive year, native son Chris Reich, a 2004 graduate of East Hampton and current runner at SUNY Oswego, bolted out to an early lead and never looked back.
To pencil these Bonackers into the Class A county championship game would be a mistake - the road between here and there is far too perilous. However, one would be foolish to write them off as well. Their coach is the winningest in state history and their roster, even without the familiar names of Mikey Russell and Marcus Edwards, has plenty of firepower with which to operate.
The curtain went up on the 2008-2009 season, and in the Westhampton Beach boys basketball team's opener with Bridgehampton, the Hurricanes went right into attack mode. It was just the kind of defensive effort 'Canes Coach Bill Hempfling hoped to see out of the gates, and in knocking off the Killer Bees, 60-36, just the kind of show they'll need to put on every night in a harrowingly difficult League VI. 4 comments
Becoming a winning team just doesn't happen to a squad overnight as the Westhampton Beach girls basketball team will attest. The Lady Hurricanes would surely love to post more wins now rather than later - but for the time being, heading in the right direction will have to suffice.
Upset hopes went by the wayside and fast for the Amityville Warriors when East Hampton, which handed out two drubbings earlier in the week (a 21 point and a 42 point), raced out to a 19-point first-quarter lead and never looked back. East Hampton rumbled to an impressive 78-62 victory to stay a game clear of rival John Glenn in the league standings. Amityville, which stood at 4-1 to Bonac's 5-0 coming in, slipped two games behind.
Motivation was plenty abundant for the Bridgehampton boys basketball team as the Killer Bees played for the hometown crowd battling for a playoff berth in Class D Friday evening. Itching to rebound from a lopsided loss to Greenport three nights earlier, more than anything else, though, they were playing for their coach.
Stavola, who became Long Island's all-time strikeout queen during her four years at East Hampton, wakes up thinking about softball and dozes off only after she's logged a full day, complete with a morning workout, practice, rehabilitation in the training room, as well as all else that college has to offer. Such is the life of a student-athlete.
Competing against the state's elite jumpers, the senior nevertheless showed the mettle of a competitor who had been to states three times. Hren flew over 5 feet, 4 inches to finish sixth in the high jump. By medaling, Hren earned All-State accolades for the first time in her career.
Spring practice at schools countywide began on Monday afternoon, and even though the rain and cold forced many East End teams to take their games indoors, it was good to be back. Paired with the enthusiasm, however, was a sense of urgency. For some, the season isn't even two weeks away. 3 comments
