SI Girls Roll To Southeast Regional Win, Book Spot At States

This year, SI was a little stronger, Haldane a little weaker, and it presented a prime opportunity to open some eyes. The Suffolk County Class D champs seized that opportunity and the result was arguably the most significant victory in the program's history. Despite a lapse in game three, the Lady Indians controlled the action and when Kelsey McGayhey drove a set to the floor to seal game four, they celebrated a 28-26, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19 victory in the Southeast Regional final.

The Lady Bonackers, once down and out trailing two games to none in the Long Island Class A final against Wantagh, were flying high now. With a raucous crowd behind them, they roared back to win 18-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 in a turnaround that was nothing short of spectacular. With the triumphant victory, they were crowned Long Island champs and booked their first trip to the state final four in the program's history.

Two teams from East Hampton reached the point that they'd hoped to since the first practice in the pre-season and even before then. The boys soccer squad met a tough match in Comsewogue, the defending state champions, and fell 2-0, but the girls volleyball team made sure Bonac fans weren't entirely disappointed, disposing of Eastport-South Manor to win the Class A county title.

The Lady Baymen had failed in their only previous visit to the county title match in 2004, and first-game jitters surfaced in their return trip against the defending champs. However, the switch flipped early in the second game and HB was on point from then on, posting an impressive 19-25, 25-13, 25-9, 25-16, at St. Joseph's College's John A.
For four years, the Flying Point 10K for Autism Awareness has brought the developmental disorder to the forefront, raising tens of thousands of dollars for those affected by it. Even with the progress that has been made, more must still be done, said race organizer Kim Covell, and the community has joined in to support the cause.

With the amount of work that the Southampton football team and coaching staff puts in on a yearly basis, any season without the playoffs is considered a disappointment. Head Coach Darren Phillips and the Mariners have made their bid but come up short the last three seasons. Considering their talent and depth in 2009, Phillips sees no reason why they should swing and miss again this fall.

In the 33rd Annual Great Bonac 10K Foot Race, Rojas received just the push he needed. The 23-year-old added another victory to his lengthy resume, triumphing over hard-charging James Consiglio and a field of 119 en route to capturing first place in the 10-kilometer race.

Memories from the 87-36 loss handed out by Greenport will expire in a year's time when the same two teams are very likely to meet on the very same stage.
