New York City - Luxury real estate firm
Brown Harris Stevens, an exclusive affiliate of Christie's Great Estates, is announcing that Balcastle, one of the most legendary and historically significant homes on the East End of Long Island, is on the market for $4.5 million. The property was completed in 1911 by local craftsman and designer J. Edward Elliston, and is considered a rare example of America's Gothic Revival. Belcastle's grand brick and limestone tower rises above .43 acres of lush gardens, and is located in the heart of Southampton Village near beaches, shops and restaurants.
"There is honestly nothing like this in the Hamptons" stated listing agent Rosemary Renna at Brown Harris Stevens. "From its storied past, to the unbelievable restoration and design elements added by its current owners William Sofield and Dennis Anderson, this property is somewhat of a local celebrity."
Balcastle is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was restored by its owner internationally renowned architect and designer William Sofield. Several of the local guidebooks note that the property was designed as a school for the Arts and Crafts movement, and during renovations to the castle, Sofield found a postcard calling the building the Simmons Vocal Academy.
Perhaps the most impressive architectural feature of Balcastle is the Gazebo, a Neoclassical and Gothic Revival nestled on the grounds overlooking the pool and gardens. The 30-foot facetted glass rotunda is perfect for the overflow of summer guests and acts as pool house, informal garden room and guest residence. It also features an additional sleeping chamber and bath, outdoor shower, wet bar, and kitchenette. Balcastle boasts high ceilings and over-scaled windows with exquisitely detailed with mullions and traceries.
