Bonac Cruisers Classic Car Show: Chrome As Jewels

Chrome shined and glittered at the Bonac Cruisers Classic Car Show. (Joe Strand)

Amagansett - The Annual Bonac Cruisers Classic Car Show was held in Amagansett over Memorial Day Weekend on the grounds of the American Legion, and drew auto enthusiasts from all over the East End.

Chrome design at its coolest, 1951 Ford Crestliner.

Where has all the chrome gone? Gone to drivers everyone - when will they ever learn - never!!

Each car is an individual statement of design TLC, and these beauties perched in the surrounding landscape of The Hamptons sets the mood for doo wop music, sipping from a hidden flask, leather jackets and babes, and most importantly, the healthy competition of who has the most pride in "The Ride."

Those of us of a certain age look at these cars as more artistic sculpture than eye candy - but man, do these feats of design and engineering satisfy the sweet tooth in all of us.

Call them muscle cars, bone crushers, pebble pounders, boulder bangers or stone crushers - whatever phrase you recall - these kings of the road remind all of us that speed and horsepower are only equal to the body they are encased in.

Whether you drive, restore or simply look at 'em - these design wonders are here to stay and will always have fans of every age.

Chrome and color make the scene in Amagansett. Here is a custom painted Mercury, circa 1951.
