East Hampton - To prepare for an open-water swim race in Rincon, Puerto Rico, next month, and to work toward a longer-term goal of getting my lifeguard certification, I've enrolled in a winter long TRX program at a few of our local gyms. TRX is short for Total Body Resistance eXercise, a type of training that was developed for the U.S. Navy Seals. It uses a specially designed set of straps that allow people of all weights and fitness levels to build core strength, improve balance, flexibility, and joint stability.
I'm loving TRX! The simple straps and handles work by using your own bodyweight as resistance against gravity, and you position your body in varying angles depending on the level of resistance you want. It's simple to make the exercises harder or easier just by adjusting your stance. And you can do so many different kinds of exercises - it's not possible to get bored! With so much variety, you can design a short routine that you can perform daily. You don't need a gym to do TRX, because the gear is small, light and relatively inexpensive (under $200). You just need something strong to attach it to, like a pull-up bar, tree branch, or even a door (there is a special door anchor accessory for this purpose).
I'm finding my swim times improving as a result of core strengthening from the TRX - I'm hoping it will help with my yoga, too - it's definitely a great stretching aid. You can hold poses longer and attempt positions that would otherwise require assistance. I can't think of an athlete in any sport, professional or recreational, that wouldn't find the TRX an awesome training tool. Even for the non-athlete, the benefits are significant. It's a low impact exercise, so it's less likely to cause injuries. For those who want a good cardio fitness program, it's easy to change exercises quickly to make the TRX work as a circuit trainer. It also helps reduce bone loss by providing a weight-bearing exercise without the weights.
If you want to stay in 'summer' shape this winter, check out TRX for yourself. Take a class at your local gym so you can determine whether or not to invest in the equipment. And please share your experiences with us - your inspiring stories of conquering your own challenges and meeting your own goals deserve to be celebrated!
