Sag Harbor - New York State Assemblyman
Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) announced that he has introduced the New York State Bicycle Tourism Promotion Act in the New York State Assembly. The bill is sponsored in the State Senate by State Senator Jose Serrano (D-Bronx), the Chairman of the Senate Tourism committee.
Thiele stated, "We need to recognize the role that cycling plays in local tourism. Increasingly, bicycles are utilized by travelers to explore local communities, or as a method of travel through the state.
As bicycles help expand travel destinations and tourism, the state should act to support the growth in this sector. It is the objective of this legislation to collaborate with local tourism agencies to facilitate bicycle tourism. The legislation would provide a mechanism to connect travelers with information and maps of bicycling routes and destination points.
Thiele has taken a leadership role in promoting bicycle use and tourism through projects on state highways that have established bicycle lands, paths, and routes, such as SR 114, SR 24, and SR 27.
Guest (robert jereski) from new york says:
As someone whose family has been visiting and living in the Hamptons for over 55 years, I couldn't agree more with the importance of this legislation and with the comments over the last two days. The ban on bike riding through Main Street and Jobs lane has always baffled me. What better way to promote bike riding and end the crawling bumper-to-bumper pollution vortex of Southampton than to allow bikes through these towns. Many would do their shopping with bikes instead of driving their cars reducing traffic and making the town pleasant for all.
