As so often the case, a great idea blossoms from necessity. In January of 2003, Gita Costa and then partner, Heather Bell, often found themselves in search of a great ponytail holder. "We are young mothers who are always on the go and often wear our hair up and we did not like our options, so we decided to make our own," says Gita Costa designer and owner of ElizaGray. They started designing ponytail holders with hand encrusted candy-colored Swarovski crystals ornaments in the shapes of hearts, frogs, flowers and shells. All designs were whimsical with an emphasis on sparkle and color.
In the summer of 2003 ElizaGray sold their ponytail holders and belts at a family friend's store, Eye of the Needle, in Nantucket. They were an instant hit! The girls could barely keep up with production that summer and what started out as a hobby, quickly became a booming business and ElizaGray was born.
ElizaGray developed a loyal customer who wanted more that just ponytail holders and belts, and they obliged. The collection quickly expanded to include day and evening bags, brooches, t-shirts and compacts. All designs have the signature ElizaGray Swarovski crystal jeweled ornament. Each one of the ornaments 300-500 Swarovski crystals are placed by hand. The collection is produced in both Italy & Spain.
ElizaGray is currently in its third year of operation and selling in over 40 high-end specialty stores across the U.S. including Steve Stollman in Southampton.
So, what do all true New Yorkers do in the summer? Head to the Hamptons. While you are out here, be sure not to miss the ElizaGray trunk show at Steven Stollman starting Friday July 8 running through Sunday July 10 between 10am - 6pm Friday and Saturday and 12pm- 5pm on Sunday.
