Two great musical Hampton residents,
Paul McCartney and
Billy Joel, made a little rock history last Friday night when the former Beatle took the stage at the end of Joel's second and last Shea Stadium show.
McCartney hadn't played Shea since 1966 with
The Beatles, when he was just 24. But he returned to perform "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Let it Be," sending an already cheering crowd over the top.
Billy had already brought special guests
Tony Bennett,
Garth Brooks,
Roger Daltry of
The Who, and
Steven Tyler of
Aerosmith onto to the stage during his three-hour set. Hometown boy Joel saluted New York in performing the two final rock shows at Shea. The home to baseball's Mets will close when this season ends. Just when the crowd thought it couldn't get any better Paul strode onto the stage to a deafening roar.
For McCartney, pulling off this surprise wasn't easy but thanks to NYPD he was able to pull it off like a military operation. He arrived at JFK airport at 10 p.m. and then zoomed over to Shea with a police escort to make his timed appearance. Joel even started the show a little later, hoping it would help hasten McCartney's arrival.
Billy had plenty of other major fans in the audience, too, including ex-wife
Christie Brinkley, current wife
Katie Lee Joel, and daughter
Alexa Ray Joel. At some point during the show, a man down front apparently proposed to his girlfriend between songs. It caught Joel's eye, who advised the man, "Get a good pre-nup."
Unfortunately, one person who should have been there wasn't –
Sid Bernstein the man who brought The Beatles to America for the first concert at Shea Stadium wasn't invited to Shea's last night. Sid, who spawned the British Invasion when he brought over
The Rolling Stones,
The Kinks,
The Moody Blues and
The Dave Clark Five, said: "Can I tell you how upset I am that I wasn't invited? I couldn't afford a ticket. I'm not angry, but life is what it is. It is full of disappointments, but also joys."

Queen of soul,
Aretha Franklin, headed home to Detroit on Monday by bus (she refuses to fly) after her annual two weeks in the Hamptons. But she won't be gone for long. She returns on Aug. 23 to perform a fundraiser for the Ross School in East Hampton. In between she has a few dates, but mostly this is a summer for reflecting and planning her next move. In fact, Franklin is shopping around a new album, talking to various record industry types about her future.
Now that
Heidi Klum and "Project Runway" are out at Bravo,
Sarah Jessica Parker is moving in. According to
The Hollywood Reporter, Parker's "art competition reality show has found a home" at the network, which will announce the deal Sunday. Parker's creation, which is being co-developed by the creators of "Runway," is said to be an hour-long show featuring aspiring artists who will compete in front of a panel of judges for a top title of "American Artist" - the show's working title.
The
Jared Kushner-
Ivanka Trump romance is back in high gear.
The New York Observer publisher and the Donald's daughter were spotted at a screening of "The Dark Knight" this weekend. Reportedly, Kushner's family, who is Orthodox Jewish, had serious problems with their son marrying a non-Jewish woman even if she came with a huge fortune. Now word is Ivanka is planning to convert – shades of
Elizabeth Taylor!
If you thought you missed the omnipresent
Denise Rich at the big music events this weekend it's because the jet setter is now ensconced on her yacht, "Lady Joy" in glittery St. Tropez. This week she co-hosted her annual extravaganza with
Count Erik Wachtmeister, an over-the-top recreation of the fabled Moulin Rouge complete with can-can girls in G-strings and red and black feathers for some 800 international types. Among those ready for their
Toulouse-Lautrec moment were
Naomi Campbell,
Stephen and
Christine Schwarzman,
Wilbur and
Hillary Ross,
Joan Collins,
Buzz and
Lois Aldrin,
Paris Hilton, and
Ivana Trump.
Call her Dorothy!
Betsey Johnson has a real thing for "The Wizard of Oz". Some years ago she designed a collection that included the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy (played by her daughter,
Lulu) leading a rented Toto for the occasion.
Now Betsey is among a group of 20 designers that includes
Oscar de la Renta,
Diane von Furstenberg, and - be still my heart -
Manolo Blahnik now recreating Dorothy's glittering ruby slips to commemorate the 70th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz" next year. Warner Brothers and Swarovski, the famed crystal company, came up with the promotion to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, with an auction planned in the fall of 2009.
Until then, the shoes will cover more ground than a Kansan in a tornado, with appearances at Saks Fifth Avenue and in Bryant Park in New York during the September fashion shows, at Art Basel in Miami in December, and elsewhere next year. Betsey's design was a slipper made into a high heel, "as high as I could go, as sparkly as I could go and as fun and full of polka dots, and a tulle bow as I could make them," she said. A sketch for a
Jimmy Choo shoe is far more sedate, showing a red snakeskin pump with a caged toe.
"Gossip Girl" cutie
Chace Crawford celebrated his 23rd birthday in Water Mill with 200 of his closest friends, including co-stars
Blake Lively and
Penn Badgley. The next day, Crawford ignored girls trying to catch his eye at the T-Mobile Lounge at Mercedes Benz Polo in Bridgehampton, hanging instead with pals from his Texas hometown
Huma Abedin, right hand to
Hillary Clinton, and
Rep. Anthony Weiner are still going strong. Having battled
Barack Obama's buccaneers, the hot political couple was unfazed by cutlass-wielding pirates at the SpongeBob-style bash that real estate mogul
Joseph Moinian and his wife,
Nazee, threw at their Quogue estate

"Aliens" fans were thrilled to see their idol
Sigourney Weaver dining at OSO at the Southampton Inn where she was staying for the duration of the Writers Conference at Stony Brook Southampton. Fans were a little disappointed that she didn't join Chef
Peter Dunlop in the kitchen and flame torch the steaks for everyone.
Judy Garland's younger daughter, the brilliant singer
Lorna Luft, graciously accepted compliments while dining with
Alan and
Arlene Lazare at
75 Main Street. Alan is the creator of the oral rinse Plax - maybe that's why Lorna's smile is so dazzling!
Former Vice Presidential candidate
Geraldine Ferraro was seen rummaging for bargains at the East Hampton Antique Show. Guess even VP potentials like a good deal.
Alec Baldwin and brother
Billy Baldwin along with his wife
Chynna Phillips dined on some Chinese cuisine at Wei Fun. They sampled among other things vegetable fried rice and sesame noodles. As I have told you many times before Wei Fun is the Baldwin family fave Asian hangout.
High School Musical superstar
Zach Efron, in a grey hoodie and dark jeans with skateboard in hand, checked into the Montauk Yacht Club for the night. Later that night the teen star was spotted dining at the Lighthouse Grill at the Yacht Club with three lovely young ladies. Efron was reportedly in town for a
Teen Vogue photo shoot.
Ed Burns, wearing a Mets cap, and driving a hybrid Tahoe, treated his gorgeous wife
Christy Turlington and their kids for some soft ice cream at the new Cherrystone's Clam and Lobster Shack in East Hampton
Billy Baldwin and
Chynna Phillips sans brothers Baldwin or kids stepped out for a grown-ups night and dinner with friends at the
Indian Wells Tavern. Their party of eight sampled the signature sizzling fajitas, Tavern burger and fish, and nachos.
Bravo TV's "Top Chef" first female winner
Stephanie Izard, a frequent Citarella shopper, was in on Friday. She stocked up on tons of fresh fish and produce, I'm only sorry I wasn't invited for dinner. The next evening
Jodie Foster who clearly didn't want to cook picked up some prepared food with a male companion. We spotted Foster out and about again this week for lunch at the Dockside in Sag Harbor with two little boys and a female friend. Glad to see this Oscar winner here in the Hamptons.
Chris Martin and
Gwyneth Paltrow spent a cozy night a deux at Cherrystone's Clam and Lobster Shack Sunday night enjoying steamed littlenecks and lobster washing it all down with a great Pinot Grigio.
At Nick & Toni's this weekend, ogglers may have been a little let down as the crowd was filled with regulars - but such smashing regulars -
Richard Prince,
Bob Balaban,
Larry Gagosian,
Robert Benton, sunshine bringer
Sam Champion, and our fave Hamptons couple
April Gornik and
Eric Fischl. Hardly a night at "Cheers"!
My personal best sightings of the week:
Ellen and
Chuck Scarborough walking hand in hand like two teenagers in love on Windmill Lane and
Alex Kuczynski Stevenson holding her three-month-old beautiful son
Max whose blue eyes could light up the sky while chatting with friends on Main Street.
So there – Cheers!
