Lots of dish on the food circuit this week from luxe dining to fast noshes - some downright silly and some worth sending up a cheer.
After coming under fire from right wing commentator
Michelle Malkin, the folks at Dunkin' Donuts have pulled an ad in which spokesperson and new Southampton resident
Rachael Ray is wearing a scarf that resembles a keffiyeh, the traditional head and neck wear of Muslims. The fact that gals and guys all over America have taken to wearing the homespun headgear seems to have gone totally over the heads of the suits in DD's corporate offices. Seems that they thought our sweet Rach looked a little "terrorist" and buckled to the silly, downright racist comments within days.

The once popular but now shuttered Southampton restaurant Savanna's is now in the hands of one of New York City's most powerful real estate players. Long one of the East End's favorite restaurants, Savanna's has a new owner and operator -
Prudential Douglas Elliman chairman
Howard Lorber who just bought the eatery from the estate of business mogul
Howard Gittis. Manhattan restaurateur
Tony Fortuna will run the steakhouse to be called TBar at Savanna's, expected to open this month. The menu will be similar to Fortuna's thriving TBar Steak & Lounge on the Upper East Side. Meanwhile, Lorber's PDE is listing Gittis' sprawling Southampton mansion for $59 million.
One gang skipped the meat and potatoes to dine on very haute cuisine last week. The New York Public Library hosted a dinner in honor of
Stephen Schwarzman toasting him for his $100 million unrestricted gift to the Library. Over 190 guests, including many of the library's most prominent backers attended, including a number of
Steve and wife
Christine's pals on the East End:
Candice Bergen and
Marshall Rose,
Don and
Catie Marron,
Kathy Rayner,
Lewis B. Cullman,
Liz Rohatyn,
Pete Peterson,
Jane Stanton Hitchcock,
Caroline Kennedy, and
Annette and
Oscar de la Renta.
The menu for the elegant evening was absolutely delicious and for $100 million I hoped they served it all on 18kt. chargers!
More than eating - my other passion, especially on a cloudy day, is shopping and the forecast for that is looking great. Southampton seems to be recapturing its glory days as the shopping mecca for the luxe set. In addition to the ultra chic
Jackie Rogers setting up shop on Jobs Lane, there's been a real flurry of moving vans along the trendy lane. Italian sandal king
Fabio Tesoro has filled his windows with gorgeously bejeweled flats and sandals just perfect for those glittering summer fetes. Thankfully, I didn't spot any of those knee-high gladiator sandals that are all the rage - at least for those who don't have fatty calves squeezing out. I don't care if they're "Sex in the City" vetted or
Cynthia Rowley approved, woman warrior though I am, I don't want to look like a gladiator.
Tucked into one of the lovely courtyards is Queen of the Slopes,
Erin Snow whose sleek performance ski-wear covered the most fashionable tushes in Aspen and Gstaad in past seasons. Now Erin has moved into tennis and nautical goodies that are so-o-o-o stylish and contempo but with all those good performance wear features. Also good news is the return of
Susan Sutherland and her elegant Style Paris line to the same little courtyard across from the
Parrish Art Museum. And for that extra little bit of luxe to accessorize on Style Paris' chic ensembles, jeweler
Jill Lynn is ready to add some serious sparkle to the site of the old Fudge Company.

Kelly Klein has decided to take her passion for horses to the next step. Remember the former wife of designer
Calvin Klein's popular coffee-table book on "Pools," covering swimming "holes" around the world? Now she has put together a beautiful book for Rizzoli, due in the fall with fab equine photography by many famous people, as well as her own. She includes works by
Helmut Newton,
Bruce Weber,
Steven Klein,
Robert Mapplethorpe,
Sheila Rock,
Chris Makos,
Richard Prince,
Bob Richardson, and
Ellen von Unwerth.
All you Parrotheads take notice – your leader
Jimmy Buffet is heading down the coast – to Atlantic City no less. The gambling town's Trump Marina Hotel Casino is being sold for $316 million to a New York company that plans to rename it "Margaritaville."
Coastal Marina LLC, an affiliate of Coastal Development LLC, said it is buying the casino from real estate mogul
Donald Trump's Trump Entertainment Resorts.
Richard Fields, chairman of Coastal Marina, said the casino will take on a new identity once the sale closes. "Together with
Jimmy Buffett's team at Margaritaville, our plans are to create an exciting new property that we believe will tap its full potential and make it one of the most successful destination gaming resorts in Atlantic City," Fields said. That leaves The Donald with only two other casinos – poor guy.
Just a year after designer
Kate Spade and husband
Andy Spade sold off to
Liz Claiborne for $120 million, Andy is back in the creative mix. He has joined forces with his longtime pal
Anthony Sperduti to launch Partners & Spade. The guys will operate an art gallery, a retail store and an ad agency under the umbrella company.
We might see a bit more of
Gwyneth Paltrow out and about this summer. While her man
Chris Martin is globetrotting with
Coldplay, Gwynnie's mom
Blythe Danner is moving in for the summer to spend some quality Grandma time with little
Apple and
Moses. This sure leaves
Gwyneth with a little extra evening time.
Def Jam Recordings has named a successor for
Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter as the record label's chief executive.
Shakir Stewart got the nod. Although his title will be executive vice president, the move effectively puts Stewart at the helm of one of the most profitable labels within Universal Music Group. You might remember that I told you ages ago about
Jay-Z's $150-million deal to produce music and tours for concert giant Live Nation just prior to his tying the knot with
Beyonce. Clearly,
Jay Z will be more than able to keep Mrs. Carter in bling.
CKX, led by Chief Executive
Robert F.X. Sillerman and "American Idol" creator
Simon Fuller, agreed to a management-led buyout of the "American Idol" franchise for $1.2 billion, 13 percent less than a previous agreement. They saved themselves a tidy $150 million on the deal.
Three major television networks are joining together to raise money for cancer charities at the same time. The event, "Stand Up To Cancer," will be broadcast in September and features the network news anchors
Katie Couric of CBS,
Charles Gibson of ABC, and
Brian Williams of NBC. The joint telethon will raise money to finance new or risky treatments that ordinarily do not receive money. All three of these great anchors have connections to the cause because of family members who died of the disease.
Katie, whose husband died of colon cancer in 1998, has been a champion for cancer research for the last decade and was reportedly the driving force behind the project.
If you are stuck in the city this weekend, you may want to join fellow East Enders
Howard Stern and
Beth Ostrosky,
Kelly Ripa and
Mark Consuelos,
Joan Rivers,
Martha Stewart along with
Whoopi Goldberg,
Eli Manning, crooner
James Blunt, and
Norah Jones for philanthropist
Henry Buhl's annual SoHo Stroll to shop and raise money for the "Partnership for the Homeless." Who says shopping has to be selfish?
