Not everyone was lolling on sun drenched beaches in exotic locales or sipping hot toddies atop mountains in Colorado this holiday season. More than a few of our A-list neighbors were busy!
East Hamptonite and Nick & Toni's regular
Sally Hershberger, of the $800 haircut fame, has been doing lots of homework in the past months prepping for two new salons, in addition to her very successful Meatpacking District flagship. She'll soon be opening new hair care centers in Los Angeles and on the Upper East Side.
But the big news is that the famed cutter is going to the mass market with an affordable line called Supreme Head which will be sold exclusively at Walgreen's for a year and online. She'll be featuring gels, sprays, volumizers, and lots of other good things for your tresses. Insiders say the line will generate some $5 to $7 million the first year.
That's certainly music to the ears of Sally who has a passion for collecting contemporary art (she has Basquiat and Warhol's on her walls), gold watches to numerous to count, and houses!
Not sitting quietly counting her book profits is
Kelly Killoren Bensimon who just launched her first full jewelry collection at Bloomingdale's and will be expanding to Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, and Scoop early this year. The collection, with prices ranging from $80 to $280, was inspired by looking through decades' worth of archives at
Conde Nast and is said to be both timeless and contemporary.
Meanwhile, Kelly's ex, photographer
Gilles Bensimon, has been working til the wee hours with designer and old friend
Nicole Miller on a new ad campaign for her 3rd Date Collection of lingerie which will hit magazines in mid-January, just in time for Valentine's Day when all the guys go cuckoo checking out the steamy undies sections at the stores. Frankly, I can't wait til the third date to really work it. How about a first date bra, Ms. Miller? I need all the help I can get ASAP to make it to the second date.
Good news for athletic
Calvin Klein fans. Phillips-Van Heusen is launching Calvin Klein Performance which will cater to women's sports including yoga, running, tennis and biking. Using performance fabrics, the line will include pants, capris, shorts, tank tops, T-shirts, hooded jackets and tennis skirts and dresses. Yum!
Martha Stewart's nemesis
Peter E. Bacanovic is now out of jail and has landed in high cotton indeed. Now West Coast based, the handsome former stock adviser to the Domestic Goddess will be heading up the construction and operation of vintage jewelry king
Fred Leighton's new L.A. outpost - should be a sweet deal for Peter who's able to charm even the toughest Hollywood babes.
Amagansett's
Matthew Broderick and
Sarah Jessica Parker are revving up for the launch of the new Gucci flagship store for a good cause. The Feb. 6 opening will benefit UNICEF of which Sarah Jessica is an Official Ambassador.
Madonna will host the gala for the luxury house which will feature performances by
Alicia Keys,
Timbaland, and
Rihanna. Matt and Sarah are co-chairing along with
Drew Barrymore,
Adrien Brody,
Salma Hayek,
Sting and
Trudie Styler,
Gwyneth Paltrow,
Demi Moore and
Ashton Kutcher,
Tea Leoni, and
Lucy Liu. Unfortunately, attendees will have to wait to visit the new store as the gala dubbed "A Night to Benefit Raising Malawi and UNICEF" will be held in a specially constructed arena on the North Lawn of the United Nations.
Just before the holidays, designer
Donna Karan headed across the pond for the UK launch of the latest DKNY fragrance "Delicious Night." Though the night in London was chilly and hardly delish, that didn't stop revelers from lining up outside the Serpentine Gallery to congratulate the prolific designer and catch a whiff. Among those grooving to the beats by
DJ Mark Ronson were
Boy George,
Rosanna Arquette,
Francesca Versace, and
Jessica Stam.
The writers strike dealt their first serious blow on Hollywood's awards season with the Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was forced to cancel their big televised red carpet glam fest.
They should really take
Alec Baldwin up on his offer to host the ceremony at his NYC apartment. My friend
James Edstrom of Timessquaregossip.com shot me off a blast that Alec would do the red carpet arrivals at Tavern on the Green and then everyone could head across the street to his place for the party. He did ask that folks email their dinner requests – tuna salad, whitefish salad, or egg salad sandwiches were the options. Oh, that comes with a liter of wine and a six pack of Amstel Light. I think I'll join Alec at his house. No wonder he's up for Best Actor in a Comedy!
The writers strike may have shut down a lot of shows but new pilots in the reality genre keep apace and are still in production and Hearst executive vice president, chief marketing officer and publishing director
Michael Clinton of Water Mill snared a cameo in one. Now in addition to all his Hearst titles and that of photographer (the first book of his photos "Global Faces" was the #11 selling pictorial book in the country), he can add actor to his resume. Michael will be featured on the new series for TLC that will focus on "ugly models" Supposedly the models are not really ugly – just different. Ohhh-K.
Michael may also have a chance to plug his next book "American Portraits" by having several images featured in one of the episodes. The new tome features Americans from over 100 ethnic backgrounds.
