Talk Around Town

Southampton is really quiet. Have you noticed how quickly the streets and lanes of our villages emptied within minutes the day after Christmas? Not even deep discounts at Ralph Lauren's Jobs Lane shop could keep folks from heading off in search of snowy mountaintops or sultry beaches for the remainder of the holidays; though I did spot Jeffrey Lorria, the owner of the Florida Marlins, having dinner at The Plaza Café in Southampton on New Year's Day.

As for me, I am very content to be sitting here staring out the window as four bluejays muscle out the tiny nuthatches and wrens to finish off the last of my famed jalapeno cheese cornbread which I generously decided to share with my feathered morning companions. OK, it was harder than stone - having been left out after the last bottle of bubbly was downed, and I couldn't bear to throw it away.

So where are the peripatetic refugees from the East End? St. Barth is the destination of choice for many of our neighbors. Indeed, one of my traveling spies told me that the harbor was starting to look like Main Street and Newtown Lane with so many familiar Hamptons personalities flitting from yacht to yacht. Newly single Top Chef host, the oh-so gorgeous Padma Lakshmi is staying on financier Teddy Forstman's mega-yacht. A few docks away, Harvey Weinstein and new bride Georgina Chapman are snuggled into Denise Rich's floating hotel (for which the movie mogul is coughing up $250,000 a week - yikes!).

There were also Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Anne Hathaway, George Lucas, Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner, Billy Zane, Roger Waters, Jon Bon Jovi, Penny Marshall, Russell Simmons, Rashida Jones, John Krasinski, Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes, Jimmy Buffett, Ashlee Simpson, Google founder Sergey Brin, Lorne Michaels, Patrick Demarchelier, Andre Balazs, Tamara Mellon, Samantha Boardman and Aby Rosen, Andrew Saffir and Daniel Benedict, Serena Boardman, Bob Colacello, Richard Meier, Nicolas Berggruen, Bettina Zilkha, Miguel Forbes, stylist Rachel Zoe, Donny Deutsch, and photographer Gilles Bensimon.

Our favorite guitar-playing billionaire Paul Allen lived out his rock fantasy by backing Jon Bon Jovi and Robbie Robertson aboard Allen's good ship "Octopus" for guests that included Billy and Katie Joel. Russell Simmons took a nasty fall down the stairs but girlfriend Porschla Coleman was on hand to comfort him after he injured his foot – no dancing for Russell on this trip. Billionaire Charles Simonyi and his (dare I say "girlfriend"?) Martha Stewart threw a bash aboard his yacht.

Elsewhere on the tiny island, Ivanka Trump and youthful New York Observer publisher Jared Kushner were prepping for the New Year. Michael Bolton with longtime sweetie Desperate Housewives' star Nicolette Sheridan were canoodling. Hopping from party to party were Donny Deutsch, Ron Perelman, Terrence Howard, and Larry Gagosian.

Island hideaways appeal also to Tinsley and Topper Mortimer who are actually spending the holiday together in Mustique - no red carpets, no fashion paparazzi no spotlight – just T & T, alone at last. AAHHHH! But if they get lonesome they can skip down the beach to see Amanda Hearst and beau Winston Lapham when they settle in after they visit with Amanda's mom in Bridgehampton.

South Beach is seeing a lot of East Enders like New Line Cinema chief Michael Lynne who has some serious celebrating to do now that it's confirmed that "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson is on board for "The Hobbitt", the prequel to the cash cow Rings trilogy. It was touch and go for a while but finally Jackson came around. Nothing like a potential half a billion clams to induce one to pitch in! Peter will executive produce the Tolkien classic which introduced Frodo to the world.

Jonathan Cheban hosted his Kritik fashion show at Miami hotspot Mokai Down in Miami. HBO's "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier brought his band, the Honey Brothers, to the Hotel Victor. Eve performed for Gabrielle Union and other guests at the Shore Club hotel. Samantha Ronson spun at the Raleigh and Shannon Elizabeth handled the countdown at the Sagamore party while Calvin Klein sipped frozen drinks at the Nikki Beach opening.

My phone has been ringing like crazy with all my friends out west in Aspen, Vail, and Telluride. So far it sounds as if Aspen has the best vibe going this year and tons and tons of snow! Taking advantage of the fluffy white stuff are Goldie Hawn and long-time companion Kurt Russell, as well as Goldie's very talented daughter, Kate Hudson. Mariah Carey has so far avoided the slopes but is trotting all over town with her new puppy.

Caroline Lieberman has been keeping me up on who's where out there, since she is still waiting to move into her new 15 Central Park West digs, the primo new address in town. Bob Costas is the latest celeb to buy a very costly apartment in the tony building. The sportscaster and his wife, Jill, paid more than $11 million for a just-completed 3,500 square foot abode in the new condo tower. Other notable neighbors in Caroline's building include Denzel Washington, Sting, retired Citigroup honcho Sandy Weill, and NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon. Oh, to be a doorman there!

I heard a wonderful story from my pal music producer and filmmaker Ryan Caudill that I must share. Ryan was also in Aspen this week to shoot singer Clarissa who was opening for Seal. Seems Ryan and his crew arrived without incident but their video equipment was nowhere to be found. US Air sent the cameras elsewhere. With just a few hours before show time the ever resourceful Ryan began dialing around to all the local TV stations to borrow some equipment. The only ones who gave him the time of day – and four brand new cameras were our friends at Plum TV Aspen. Angela Konop saved the day and as a reward was able to score some much sought after footage. Good things really do happen to good people. Yeah, Plum!

Also getting a Rocky Mountain high were Ivana Trump and Denise Rich. Mrs. Seal, aka Heidi Klum, and their three kids were all over the bunny slopes. Heidi was very excited that she had scored Victoria Beckham as a judge for the next season of Project Runway.

Bethenny Frankel, the chef who almost won "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart," is heading off to the Sundance Film Festival this month in the footsteps of Rocco DiSpirito and Tyler Florence to host "Chefdance", a 10-night culinary event. Frankel handpicked such top chefs as Richard Sandoval from Maya and Pampano; Gene Kato from Japonais; Christopher Lee from Gilt; and Todd Mark Miller from STK, who will cook the exclusive "50 for 50" dinner for 50 Cent. The Chefdance Legend Award will be presented to Sirio Maccioni of Le Cirque in celebration of the film "A Table in Heaven," documenting Maccioni's extraordinary life in the restaurant business.
