Talk Around Town

Before I get into the great dish that I've picked up this week, I thought I'd pass on a few tips on several happenings this weekend that are quintessentially classic Hamptons that you won't want to miss!

If you love art – and artists – as I do, you simply must check out the Artist Alliance of East Hampton's Fall Studio Tour. Meet over 20 artists, see their works in process and get to know them one on one. You'll be amazed at the enormous amount of creativity all around us. They have a preview Friday evening of samples of all the artists work at Walk Tall Gallery in East Hampton, so you can map out just which studios interest you most.

Life is Fab for Kimora Lee Simmons and her hottie boyfriend Djimon Hounsou.

Saturday there's a preview reception of the annual celebrity birdhouse auction at Hampton Road Gallery featuring the craftiness of such folks as Aretha Franklin, Brooke Shields, and event chair Renee Zellweger at Southampton's Hampton Road Gallery. Celebrate the beauty of our East End landscapes and meet the painters and photographers of Plein Air II, the Peconic Land Trust's traveling exhibition at the Wallace Gallery.

On Sunday I'll be heading over to Wolffer Estate for their annual Harvest Festival with fun stuff like picking and stomping your own grapes, barrel rolling contests, pony rides and face painting for the kids and, of course, for the grown-ups Wolffer's award winning wines. I may or may not, depending on how much rose I imbibe, enter the Harvest Wine Queen competition, but you certainly can.

After Wolffer, do your bit for preserving the quality of life in our villages with a stop at the Save Sag Harbor benefit which boasts supporters like Christie Brinkley and daughter Alexa Ray Joel, who'll be performing. Just about every restaurant, vineyard, artist and business has donated food, wine, auction items and raffle prizes for this cause. You'll feel real good about spending your money here!

Now on to the bits and pieces, it's splitsville for Tory Burch and Lance Armstrong. As I told you, the fashion designer and the Tour de France champion had been dating for a year, but decided to break up Monday. Despite the fact that they were purchasing a big old house in Southampton for their little tribe, it seems the pressures of their careers and much traveling for both hasn't help them organize their lives together and their children. Tory has a brood of six kids, counting her ex-husband's children from a previous marriage, and Lance has three little ones. That's a lot of soccer scheduling for anyone. Friends say the split is VERY amicable and they are still close. That's always what they say…

Clearly still friends are Kimora Lee and Russell Simmons who, as everyone knows, have gone their separate ways. But that didn't stop Miss K from tossing a surprise 50th birthday bash for her record mogul ex-husband and inviting his new squeeze Porschla Coleman to boot. Now that is civilized behavior, but now that Kimora has complete control of the Phat franchise as I told you, she can afford to be gracious.

Kimora, with new man in her life Djimon Hounsou and children Ming Lee and Aoki Lee, was the perfect hostess for the "50 and Fabulous" fete which brought out a raft of music, film and fashion heavyweights including Patti LaBelle, LL Cool J, Alicia Keys, Denise Rich, Jaci and Morris Reid, Gabrielle Union, Brett Ratner, Jessica Rosenbloom and Jonathan Cheban, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Tommy was all excited about his latest retail undertaking, a new exclusively women's store on the stretch of Bleecker Street between Parry and Charles in Greenwich Village.
Tommy is the latest big name to add fashion sizzle to the trendy area which already has hip outposts of Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Intermix, and James Perse drawing the fashionistas downtown.

Speaking of Perse, the Los Angeles king of the monochromatic look, my spies tell me he will be opening up on Main Street in East Hampton come April. Further adding to the Rodeo Drive look of the centuries old village.

Billionheiress Anna Anisimova arrived at the Coterie trade show last week with a team of beefy bodyguards who almost created a riot while the young socialite previewed her good pal Jonathan Cheban's Kritik collection. Love his sexy terry loung pieces!

Matthew Broderick and his bride, the oh-so-fashionable Sarah Jessica Parker – currently everywhere in New York filming you know what, will be the Honorary Chairs of the upcoming Lenox Hill Hospital Autumn Ball 2007 on October 22nd at The Waldorf-Astoria, the only place big enough to squeeze in all the hospital's brilliant doctors and their celebrated patients. SJP and Matthew have a very special place in their heart for the doctors and nurses at Lenox Hill as that's where their lovely child was born.

The gala celebrates the hospital's dedicated doctors, nurses, staff and benefactors and over 150 years of service to the community. For over a century, the Autumn Ball has been regarded as one of the season's most glamorous events, and this year is no exception. The evening will be chaired by Judith and William Hiltz and Gudrun and Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD. Vice-chairmen for the gala are longtime supporters of The Hospital Erika and Peter A. Aron, Jean and Ralph Baruch, Ann and Thomas E. Dewey, Jr., Marlene Hess and James D. Zirin and Ellen and Jim Marcus.

Benefit Co-Chairmen including many Hamptonites are Susan and Richard Braddock, Jonathan Canno and Pierce Roberts, Jean and Walter Delafield, Nancy and Robert Downey, Catherine and Richard Foster, Margaret Duffy and Eugene F. Gaughan, Gladys George and Stuart Orsher, MD, Jane H. Goldman and Benjamin Lewis, MD, Diane and Paul Guenther, Elisabeth and Peter Haveles, Jane and Michael Hoffman, Barbara and Eugene H. Kummel, Karen and William Lauder, Francesca Stanfill and Richard B. Nye, Ann Marie and Robert F. Shapiro, Eleanor and Donald Taffner, Ann and Tony Wimpfheimer, Reva and Jon A. Wurtzburger, and Douglas T. Yates

Also kicking up their heels as 22nd Anniversary Chairmen are Rolex CEO and President Allen Brill and the oh-so-glamorous Patricia Kennedy, who are leading the charge for the annual Career Transition for Dancers Jubilee, Dance Rocks! slated for October 29th at City Center of New York. The dynamic duo take their rock seriously and have enlisted Priscilla Presley, wife of the late King – as in Elvis – as Honorary Chair for the electrifying evening of entertainment. Besides honoring the wildly talented Bebe Neuwirth, dance patron and philanthropist Anka Palitz and The Jerome Robbins Foundation, the evening will feature a smorgasbord of great dance and music.

Already, producer/director Ann Marie DeAngelo has an incredible lineup: Charlotte D'Amboise, Christine Ebersole, Melissa Manchester, artists from American Ballet Theatre, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet San Jose, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Parsons Dance Company and much, much more. Auction Chair Ann Van Ness and her husband Bill are tossing a little kickoff for the gala this week at their gorgeous New York townhouse, where I am sure I'll hear even more about swell additions to this spectacular event.

Proud parents Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone fame and actress Ellen Barkin were front row center at New York's famed music spot, The Cutting Room, to catch the new band Josef K which features Jann's son Gus and Jack Byrne, Ellen and former husband Gabriel Byrne's son. The band played to a packed house owing more to the fact that they are really that good and not simply celeb offspring coasting on Dad's or Mom's marquee value. Way to go, guys!

Stewart Lane and Bonnie Comley have a busy fall now that they are in the middle of rehearsals for their limited engagement revival of the timeless comedy "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Kevin Kline in the lead as the long nosed Cyrano. Joining Kline are Jennifer Garner as Roxane and Daniel Sunjata as Christian. Also featured are Max Baker as Ragueneau, Chris Sarandon as Comte de Guiche, John Douglas Thompson as Le Bret, Concetta Tomei as Roxane's Duenna, and Euan Morton as Ligniere (Didn't you just love him in the lead role of "Tommy" at Bay Street?). The show begins previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on October 12th for a 10-week engagement, with opening night set for November 1st. The production will be directed by David Leveaux from Anthony Burgess' translation and adaptation of Edmond Rostand's 1897 romantic classic.

Fresh on the heels of their being honored by Elton John at the over the top benefit for his AIDS foundation, candle gurus Laura and Harry Slatkin hosted a private cocktail party last week at their Upper East Side townhouse to celebrate the wedding of Anouschka and John Demsey, the genius behind MAC Cosmetics. Between Demsey and the Slatkins, literally hundreds of millions have been raised for AIDS charities.

Among the fashionable crowd congratulating the couple were designers Zac Posen, Maggie Norris, Thom Brown, Leonard Lauder, Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer, William Lauder, Lisa Airan, Helen Lee Schifter, Blaine Trump, Alex Papachristidis, Scott Nelson, Jeff Pheifle, and Adam Mahr. A late arriving Iman came midway through Slatkin's toast to the happy couple. Also raising their glasses to the newlyweds were Linda Wells, Dominique Browning, Cindi Leive, Ingrid Sischy, Sandy Brant, Atoosa Rubenstein, Bonnie Fuller, and my favorite fellow gossip R. Couri Hay.

Iman congratulated Demsey on having signed the inimitable Eartha Kitt as the face for MAC's new line of makeup for women of color. Kitt is currently wowing them at The Carlyle and was toasted in absentia!

Get well soon, Christy Turlington! A pal of the supermodel-turned-actress tells us she was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. Fortunately, they caught it early and she's going to be fine.

Gwyneth Paltrow, acclaimed chef Mario Batali, and New York Times food columnist Mark Bittman have now set off on a road trip of the Spanish countryside that boasts slick cars, hearty food and a candid camera monitoring the flashy travelers. Paltrow, the duo of American food gurus, and Spanish actress Claudia Bassols announced their journey, which will be captured in the 13-part TV series, "Spain...on the Road Again." The series, which is designed to give viewers a closer look at Spain's cuisine, wine, culture and nightlife, will air on PBS next fall.

The four celebs set off this week to spend much of the next four months cruising around in a fleet of Mercedes, sampling the best fare in a country that usually ranks as the world's second most powerful tourist destination, after France. No one called me - Muchas Gracias!
